Holiday deer hunt set after Christmas

New York’s late bow and muzzleloader deer seasons are reopening across most of the Southern Zone from Dec. 26 through Jan. 1, giving hunters a welcome chance to extend their time afield during the holiday deer season. It’s a tradition that blends outdoor opportunity with family time, and one that highlights how winter recreation can be safely shared by everyone who loves the outdoors.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) encourages hunters and non-hunters alike to “share the snow” during this busy holiday period. With schools closed and families gathered, the Holiday Deer Hunt is especially meaningful for young hunters getting valuable time outdoors with parents, grandparents and friends.

To participate, hunters must have a valid hunting license along with bow or muzzleloader privileges. Any unfilled Regular Season deer tags may be used during the Holiday Hunt for a deer of either sex. However, hunters should note that the Holiday Deer Season is not open in the Northern Zone, nor in WMUs 9C, 1A, or 2A within the Southern Zone. Additionally, in WMUs 8C and 4J, only archery equipment–crossbows or vertical bows–is permitted.

This time of year also brings hikers, skiers, snowshoers, and other outdoor enthusiasts to the landscape. Hunting continues to maintain an exceptional safety record, aided by requirements such as wearing blaze-orange during big game hunting seasons. Other recreationists are encouraged to wear bright colors as well, increasing visibility and awareness for all users.

Landowners play a vital role by allowing access to their property, and DEC has issued formal gratitude for their generosity. Hunters should remain mindful that others may also have permission to recreate on land where hunting is allowed, there are no special closures during the Holiday Hunt.

Chautauqua County’s mix of state forests, wildlife management areas, and cooperative private lands makes it a destination not only for hunters, but also for hikers, snowshoers, bird watchers, and cross-country skiers. DEC reminds everyone that these activities can safely co-exist.

Winter conditions demand preparation. Shorter days, cold temperatures, and snow-covered terrain mean planning ahead is essential for a safe and enjoyable outing. Proper clothing, safety awareness, and respect for fellow outdoor users help ensure the season remains positive for everyone.

The Holiday Deer Season is more than just an extension of the hunt–it’s a celebration of New York’s outdoor heritage, shared spaces, and the spirit of the season
