Sliwa becomes 3rd Forestville girl to reach 1,000 points

FORESTVILLE — Carilene Sliwa needed 14 points to reach 1,000 career points and the Forestville senior wasted no time in getting it done this season.

In the home opener against Chautauqua Lake, Sliwa scored 13 points in the first half and a steal to start the second half brought everyone in the gym to their feet.

Sliwa layed in the basket to become the third Forestville girl to reach 1,000 points and finished the game with a whopping 37 as the Hornets defeated the Eagles 65-36 in nonleague action Tuesday night.

Sliwa paced the Hornets (1-0, 0-0) with her 37 points and seven steals, Elizabeth Case had a double-double with 12 points and 15 boards and Ingrid Gibson made 11 rebounds.

Chautauqua Lake (0-1, 0-0) was led by Brina Jacobson with 13 points and nine rebounds, while Addison Chess collected five rebounds.

Sliwa is the first female 1,000-point scorer since Tonja (Royce) Haugh in 2005 and the first to reach the threshold was Kelly (Schonhart) Woleben in 1991.

CARDS SURVIVE

SALAMANCA — It was a tale of two halves between a pair of Cattaraugus County rivals with Randolph just holding off Salamanca 51-49 in a nonleague game.

The Cardinals, behind 14 points from Ava Sears and 13 from Gianna Bowles, led 38-8 at halftime, but the Warriors stormed back.

In a big way.

Behind Maliyah Foster, who tallied all 21 of her points in the second half, Salamanca outscored the Cardinals 41-13 after the break to nearly pull off an improbable comeback.

Sears finished with 22 points, four assists and four steals; and Bowles added 16 points, eight assists and six steals to lead the way for Randolph.

For the Warriors, Makenzie Crouse was the other player in double figures, finishing with 12 points, nine of which came after intermission.

TROJANS OPEN WITH A WIN

Braya Beaver led three players in double figures with 18 points as Southwestern defeated Panama 50-45 in a nonleague game.

Beaver, who connected on five 3-pointers, also collected four steals, four rebounds and a pair of assists; Gianna Sirianni added 11 points, four rebounds and three steals; Charlotte Beaver had 10 points, 10 rebounds and six steals; Marlana Cresanti added nine steals, four boards and two assists; and Jada Edwards pulled down seven rebounds.

“It’s great to start the season with a win, especially against a good team,” said Trojans head coach Kay Sirianni, who saw her team post a 14-4 fourth quarter. “We only have eight girls, but they all contributed tonight. Our goal is to work to get one percent better every day.”

For the Panthers, McKenna Kolstee and Kiera Loberg both scored 14 points, and teammate Jessica Lyon contributed 10.

WESTFIELD — Nahlia Douglas posted a double-double with 11 points and 16 rebounds to lead Westfield past Gowanda 57-40 in nonleague play.

Mackenzie Schumaker paced the Wolverines (1-0, 0-0) with 15 points and seven rebounds, Olivia Wolfe also collected seven boards, while both Reagan Weingart and Arielle Corbett had six rebounds.

Corrina John led the Gowanda (0-1, 0-0) effort with a game-high 25 points.

SILVER CREEK — Gracelin Stevens scored 16 points as Silver Creek posted a dominant 53-5 nonleague victory over Pine Valley.

Maddy Blair added 9 points and Molly Shaw provided 7 for Silver Creek (1-0, 0-0).

Pine Valley falls to 0-1 on the season and will hope to bounce back Friday at Maple Grove.
