STWOA Tournament begins today at JCC

JAMESTOWN — Thirty-seven area wrestling teams will crowd into the Physical Education Complex at Jamestown Community College on Friday and Saturday to compete in the 38th STWOA Holiday Wrestling Classic.

From those many teams there are five local athletes that managed top seeds throughout the 14 weight classes.

Starting things off at the lowest weight class is a returning champion, Randolph’s Kamren Anderson, who won at 101 pounds last year and is the top seed at 103 today.

After finishing in second place at 108 pounds last year, Southwestern’s Adrian Torres returns as the top seed today at 110 pounds with Eden’s Mason DellaPenta the No. 2 and Randolph’s Tanner Patterson the No. 7.

With a run to the podium a year ago at the state championships, Southwestern’s Miles Torres enters the year with plenty of hype and is the top seed at 126 pounds. Fredonia/Forestville/Silver Creek’s Mayson Simmons comes into the bracket as the No. 6 and Jamestown’s Nicholas Melendez is No. 11.

Maple Grove’s Jaxon Kraft is the top seed at 150 pounds, while Warren (Pa.) holds the No. 2 seed with Ryan Letko.

Falconer/Cassadaga Valley’s Patrick Braley will look to improve last year’s second-place finish coming in as the top seed at 190 pounds. His group includes Eisenhower (Pa.) Bryce Wilkins at No. 3 and Frewsburg’s Branden Francis at No. 4.

Despite wins last year at the tournament, Falconer/Cassadaga Valley’s Dylan Newman, Southwestern’s Carmine Calimeri and Chautauqua Lake/Panama/Clymer/Westfield’s Colton Hamilton are not top seeds.

Newman is the No. 2 seed at 132 pounds after winning 124, just behind top-seed Cullen Edwards of St. Francis. That bracket also includes Chautauqua Lake/Panama/Clymer/Westfield’s Thandon Bensink at No. 3 and Jamestown’s Aaden Howard at No. 5.
