Fredonia State hockey, men’s hoops lose, women prevail

FREDONIA — The Fredonia State hockey team scored with 3:53 left in to make it a 3-2 game, but could not squeeze out another score, falling to Oswego on Saturday evening.
Josh Serino scored with an assist from Owen Cross to narrow the margin, and the Devils (1-12-1, 1-7-1) would later pull the goalie, but could not beat the Lakers defense.
The Lakers got on the board quickly, with Matt McQuade scoring at the 2:18 mark of the first. Fredonia State’s Hudson Cameron would tie it up at 9:06 with an apple from Antoine St. Onge.
The second period saw Oswego connect on a short-handed score, then a power play. Travis Baker scored both goals.
Serino would make it a one-goal game in the third to cap the scoring.
Charles-Anthony Barbeau made 28 saves for Fredonia State. Oswego’s Brandon Milburg made 23 stops. The Lakers improved to 11-2-1 overall and 8-1 SUNYAC with their fifth-straight win.
WOMENS HOOPS WINS
FREDONIA — Jakiera Stackhouse continued to make her presence felt with 14 points and 10 rebounds in what was her sixth double-double of the season, as the Fredonia State women’s basketball team downed Oneonta 57-49 on Saturday.
Grace Alexander added 13 points and Jayssa Snelick continued to be a force on the boards with 11 rebounds while contributing 11 points for her third double-double of the year.
The Devils improved to 9-5 overall and 4-3 in the SUNYAC. Oneonta is now 8-6 and 3-4 in the conference.
Oneonta took a 9-5 lead in the opening minutes, but the Devils closed the first quarter on a 13-4 run, with Stackhouse providing nine points. They led 18-13 after one.
The Devils would keep the lead the rest of the way, but never led by double digits against the pesky Red Dragons until the fourth quarter.
Oneonta used back-to-back field goals to open up the fourth to pull within six points 45-39. Alexander and Snelick responded as both nailed 3’s on the two ensuing possessions to give the Devils a double-digit lead. Solid defense sealed the game for the Devils.
Carlie Young led Oneonta with 15 points, seven rebounds, and three steals. They were hampered by 3-26 shooting from 3-point land and shot 30 percent from the floor for the game.
The Devils made 15-20 free throws and 6-18 from downtown, while outrebounding the Red Dragons, 40-35.
MEN’S HOOPS DROPS CLOSE GAME
FREDONIA — A 3-pointer from Fredonia’s Brian Kopp tied the game with 32 seconds remaining, but a clutch free throw from Oneonta’s Cam LaClair gave the Red Dragons a 69-68 win on Saturday afternoon. The Blue Devils fall to 1-13 and 1-6 in the conference, and the Red Dragons move to 8-6 and 6-1 in the SUNYAC.
Martin Garza finished with a game-high 24 points and led the Devils with six rebounds, and Stevie Williams had 12 points.
Late in the game, Oneonta led 68-59 with four-and-a-half minutes left to play. The Devils clutched up and went on a 9-0 run over the next four minutes to tie the game at 68.
LaClair stepped to the line with 13 seconds remaining, and made the first of two free throws. The Devils rebounded but could not convert a final attempt. LaClair led Oneonta with 18 points and nine rebounds, and Nicholas Cortez added 16 points.
Oneonta shot 50 percent from the floor, including 8-17 (47 percent) from 3-point range. Oneonta outrebounded Fredonia State 31-24. The Devils hit 47 percent from the field and 5-16 from long range. Garza had four of the 3-pointers. The Devils also caused 13 turnovers, while committing eight.
