Lady Eagles finish 2nd at Section VI duals

Fall to Niagara Wheatfield in championship match 32-30

BUFFALO — Chautauqua Lake came up just a few points short of a Section VI girls wrestling dual meet championship Friday at D’Youville University.

After winning Pool A with a 2-0 record, the Eagles — made up of girls from Chautauqua Lake, Panama, Clymer, Brocton, Westfield and Sherman — took on Niagara Wheatfield in the championship match.

With two bouts remaining, Niagara Wheatfield/Niagara Falls/Newfane claimed the title, eventually winning 32-30.

Niagara Wheatfield got off to a 5-0 start in the championship match as Alexa Doxey pinned Zoey Kling in 30 seconds at 145 pounds.

Chautauqua Lake won the next two weights. Lilly Hyde pinned Laila Ferguson in 1:27 at 152 pounds and Chloe Hosier earned a 13-0 technical fall over Keirstin Bazinet at 165 pounds.

Niagara Wheatfield rallied with two straight wins. At 185 pounds, Isabella Torres earned a 10-0 technical fall over Meghan Pauley and at 235 pounds, Selene Torres earned a pin in 1:48 over Tatum Bensink.

Chautauqua Lake then took a 19-14 lead as Samantha Schlabach pinned Cali Mota in 16 seconds at 94 pounds and Kassidy Benedetto pinned Taylor Brown in 16 seconds at 100 pounds.

But Niagara Wheatfield took command with four straight wins. At 107 pounds, Angel Moss pinned Kortlyn Fairbank in 2:32; at 114 pounds, Gabriella Barone earned a 12-1 technical fall over Taylor Pinzok; at 120 pounds, Nevaeh Senik earned a 20-10 technical fall over Alice Scarpine; and at 126 pounds, Jezell Allen took down Karagan Fairbank in 3:23. The fourth bout made the score 32-21, which clinched the match.

Aurora Maring earned a 10-0 technical fall over Harley Printup at 132 pounds and Noli Paddock pinned Audris Franklin in 25 seconds at 138 pounds for Chautauqua Lake’s final points.

Lockport beat Fredonia — which includes Forestville and Silver Creek — 44-19 in the third-place match.

Fredonia’s victories came from Avary LeGrano, a 31-second pin at 152 pounds; McKella Hodkin, a 10-0 technical fall at 165 pounds; Leah Waite, a 26-second pin at 107 pounds; and Braelynn Wicks, a 59-second pin at 138 pounds.

Chautauqua Lake beat Fredonia 49-15 and Clarence/Iroquois 62-0 in Pool A matches. Niagara Wheatfield topped Lockport 33-27 and Sweet Home/Amherst 52-11 to go 2-0 in Pool B.
