Westfield girls remain honorable mention in ‘C’ state rankings

The Frewsburg girls remained No. 1 in Class C according to the New York State Sportswriters Association after winning their own holiday tournament last week.

Already this week, the Bears have beaten Mercyhurst Prep (Pa.) and they will travel to Gowanda on Friday.

Randolph, a new honorable mention in Class C, beat Gowanda on Tuesday. The Cardinals will host Silver Creek tonight and Cassadaga Valley on Friday. Westfield remained honorable mention and then beat Panama on Tuesday night. The Wolverines will travel to Clymer on Friday.

Panama moved up a spot to No. 14 in Class D after beating Pine Valley last week, but then lost to Westfield on Tuesday. The Panthers host Southwestern tonight and visit Chautauqua Lake on Friday.

Southwestern dropped four spots to No. 16 in Class B after losing to Frewsburg and beating Sherman in Frewsburg’s holiday tournament. The Trojans beat Olean on Monday and will visit Panama tonight.

Other Western New York teams in the rankings include: No. 13 St. Mary’s of Lancaster, No. 18 West Seneca and No. 24 Lancaster in Class AAA; No. 6 Orchard Park and honorable mentions Cardinal O’Hara and North Tonawanda in Class AA; No. 13 Depew and honorable mentions Lake Shore and Lewiston-Porter in Class A; honorable mention Allegany-Limestone in Class B; and Wilson in Class C.

No. 1 teams in the state are: Monsignor Scanlan of the Catholic High School Athletic Association in Class AAA, Section V’s Pittsford Sutherland in Class AA, Section III’s Utica Notre Dame in Class A, Section V’s Hornell in Class B and Section X’s Chateaugay in Class D.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Fredonia made the biggest leap among local schools, jumping up five spots to No. 21 in Class A this week.

The Hillbillies beat Harbor Creek (Pa.) last week, but lost to rival Dunkirk on Monday. They will travel to Salamanca tonight.

Also in Class A, Dunkirk remained honorable mention after winning the Westfield Winter Classic with victories over Gowanda and Westfield. After beating Fredonia on Monday, the Marauders will visit Falconer tonight.

In Class AAA, Jamestown remained honorable mention with a win over St. Francis last week. After topping Frontier on Monday, the Red & Green will visit Williamsville North tonight.

In Class B, Randolph and Salamanca remained honorable mention selections.

The Cardinals, who hadn’t played since Dec. 16, beat Gowanda on Monday and will visit Cassadaga Valley tonight. The Warriors beat Allegany-Limestone on Monday and will host Fredonia tonight.

In Class C, Ellicottville and Westfield remained honorable mentions.

The Eagles, who hadn’t played since Dec. 22, lost to Forestville on Monday and host Franklinville tonight. The Wolverines, who beat North Collins and lost to Dunkirk in their tournament, beat Panama on Monday and will host Clymer tonight.

In Class D, Clymer moved down a spot to No. 12 and Panama moved down one to No. 13 while Forestville and Sherman remained honorable mentions.

The Pirates lost to Southwestern on Tuesday and will visit Westfield tonight. Panama, which hadn’t played since Dec. 18, lost to Westfield on Monday and beat Maple Grove on Wednesday. The Panthers will travel to Chautauqua Lake on Friday. Forestville, which hadn’t played since Dec. 20, beat Ellicottville on Monday and lost to Sherman on Wednesday. The Hornets will host North Collins tonight. Sherman beat Pine Valley last week and Maple Grove on Monday before also topping Forestville on Wednesday. The Wildcats will visit Franklinville on Friday.

Other Western New York teams in the rankings include: No. 14 Health Sciences and honorable mention Niagara Falls in Class AAA; No. 21 Canisius, No. 28 Nichols, No. 29 St. Joe’s and honorable mentions North Tonawanda, Orchard Park and St. Francis in Class AA; No. 15 St. Mary’s of Lancaster and honorable mentions Iroquois, Lewiston-Porter, Olean and Williamsville South in Class A; No. 2 Akron, No. 9 Tapestry, No. 15 Medina and honorable mentions Middle College, MST Prep and Olmsted in Class B; and No. 3 Wilson and No. 12 Global Concepts in Class C.

Top-ranked teams in the state are: Archbishop Stepinac of the Catholic High School Athletic Association in Class AAA, Section V’s Penfield in Class AA, Section III’s Westhill in Class A, Section I’s Woodlands in Class B, Section II’s Berne-Knox-Westerlo in Class C and Section X’s Bridgehampton in Class D.
