FREDONIA — Thirteen area wrestlers are heading to Albany after their performances Saturday and Sunday at the Section VI boys state qualifier, held inside Fredonia State University’s Steele Hall Fieldhouse.

The New York State Public High School Athletic Association championships are set for Friday, Feb. 27 and Saturday, Feb. 28 at MVP Arena in Albany.

Southwestern’s Carmine Calimeri qualified for his fifth state tournament with a pin of Tonawanda’s Anthony Gugino 4:35 into their 138-pound final after a 5:03 pin of Chautauqua Lake/Panama/Clymer/Westfield’s Gavin Burchanowski in the semifinals. Calimeri will be seeking his fifth podium at the state tournament, but has never finished better than third.

Southwestern’s Tavio Hoose will be going to his third NYSPHSAA championship and fourth overall state championship after he coasted to a 17-5 major decision over Falconer/Cassadaga Valley’s Patrick Braley at 190 pounds — his 200th career victory. Hoose won a NYSPHSAA title at 172 pounds in 2023 and took second at 190 pounds in 2024 before transferring to St. Francis last year and taking second at 190 pounds at the Catholic schools championship tournament. He returned to Southwestern earlier this winter and will now look for his second NYSPHSAA crown.

Chautauqua Lake/Panama/Clymer/Westfield’s Alex Bourgois was a somewhat surprising winner of the 144-pound bracket, earning a 12-8 decision over Stefano Passucci of Iroquois in the final after upsetting Gowanda/Pine Valley’s Nathan Warrior 14-13 in the semifinals.

Falconer/Cassadaga Valley’s Dylan Newman won his third straight Section VI title, pinning Portville’s Riley Horsley in the 126-pound final on Sunday at Steele Hall Fieldhouse on the campus of SUNY Fredonia. Photo courtesy of Michelle Gilbert

Chautauqua Lake/Panama/Clymer/Westfield’s Thandon Bensink won the 132-pound title, pinning Pioneer’s Evan Wright at the 1:53 mark of their final after pinning Eden’s Ruger Pastwik 1:27 into their semifinal.

Falconer/Cassadaga Valley’s Dylan Newman won the 126-pound title with a pin of Portville’s Riley Horsley at 2:43 of their championship bout. That was after Newman beat Fredonia/Forestville/Silver Creek’s Rocco Muscarella 16-0 in the semifinals.

Southwestern’s Miles Torres won the 118-pound title with a 1-0 decision over Albion’s Stryker Sanders. Earlier in the day, Torres beat Lackawanna’s Hani Nashir 4-2 in the semifinals.

Salamanca’s Kasen Hardy became the final local wrestler to win a championship when he pinned Royalton-Hartland/Barker’s RJ Townsend 5:19 into their 285-pound final. Hardy reached the championship round with a 6-2 decision over Portville’s Ian Chamberlain in the semifinals.

Adrian Torres lost a 1-0 decision to Eden’s Mason DellaPenta in the 110-pound final, but avoided a true-second place match, having already beaten Albion’s Justin Mengs earlier in the tournament.

Jamestown’s Aaden Howard was the only Red & Green wrestler to qualify for the Division 1 state meet. Howard was pinned by Ken-Ton’s Jake Giannantonio 1:48 into their championship match, but Howard avoided a true-second place match because he had already beaten third-place finisher Tyler Mauger of Sweet Home earlier in the tournament.

Randolph’s Kamren Anderson fell in the 103-pound final, getting pinned in 3:02 by Pioneer’s Owen Bliss, but he won a true-second place match over Chautauqua Lake/Panama/Clymer/Westfield’s Chester Machemer with a 51-second pin to reach the state tournament.

After his loss to Bourgeois in the semifinals, Nathan Warrior earned an 18-0 technical fall over Dunkirk’s Timothy Warrior in the third-place match and then reached the state tournament by pinning Passucci at the 2:46 mark of their true-second place match at 144 pounds.

Braley qualified for the state tournament at 190 pounds, winning a true-second place match over Frewsburg’s Branden Francis with a pin in 2:40.

Chautauqua Lake/Panama/Clymer/Westfield’s Colton Hamilton became the third Eagle to qualify for the state tournament when he wrestled his way back into a position at 215 pounds. After beating Lewiston-Porter’s Jason Burns 15-8 in the third-place match, Hamilton took on Southwestern’s Bradyen Potter and pinned him in 1:39 to clinch the true-second place spot.

Burchanowski finished third in Division 2 at 138 pounds, beating Lewiston-Porter’s Logan Lombardo with a 3:54 pin in the third-place match. Burchanowski had a chance to qualify for the state tournament in a true-second place match, but lost 15-8 to Gugino.

Falconer/Cassadaga Valley’s Noah Brandt took third place at 157 pounds. After pinning Lake Shore’s Tyler Kwilos in 1:59 during their third-place match, Brandt was pinned by Cheektowaga’s Mohammad Noor just 39 seconds into their true-second place match.

Jamestown’s Drew Bloomquist took fourth at 175 pounds, falling 15-2 in a major decision to Williamsville North/East’s Drew Fletch in the third-place match.
