Eight local girls heading to state wrestling championships
ALBANY — Chautauqua Lake sophomore Noli Paddock was one of two local girls to earn a place on the podium at the very first New York State Public High School Athletic Association intersectional girls wrestling championships a year ago at MVP Arena in Albany.
The currently undefeated Paddock (37-0) will get her second opportunity to ascend the podium Thursday for the Chautauqua Lake/Panama/Clymer/Brocton/Westfield/Sherman Eagles and she is seeded where she finished last year, No. 3 at 138 pounds. Moving up from 132 pounds, Paddock is the lone undefeated wrestler in her bracket that features defending 138-pound champion and top-seed Isabella Satalino (41-1) of Section II’s Columbia.
Paddock will be able to avoid Satalino until the finals, but before thinking about that she kicks off the tournament against Section III Phoenix freshman Aubrey Dignean (20-4) and could eventually find herself in a semifinal bout with No. 2 seed Makenzie Harbour (36-3) of Section II Shenendehowa, who finished third 120 pounds last year as a sophomore.
While Paddock can avoid facing the defending state champion until a potential final, Fredonia freshman Braelynn Wicks (35-5) has drawn Satalino in the opening round.
Out of the eight local girls competing at the state championships, Wicks has probably the most-difficult opening match, while Chautauqua Lake/Panama/Clymer/Brocton/Westfield/Sherman’s Chloe Hosier earns the highest local seed with No. 2 billing at 165 pounds. The freshman Hosier (27-9) kicks off her tournament with Section II Corinth sophomore Makenna Eastman (19-1) and then could likely see an undefeated opponent Section XI Bayshore junior Melody Medina (18-0) in the quarterfinals. However, the biggest threat in the 165-pound bracket hails from Section VI with defending state champion Michaela Thomas (37-2) of Clarence.
Chautauqua Lake/Panama/Clymer/Brocton/Westfield/Sherman sophomore Lilly Hyde (28-7) is also seeded to make the podium as the No. 5 at 152 pounds and is stacked up against Section IV Windsor eighth-grader Ana Cartagena in her first match. Hyde is hoping to reach the podium last year after a difficult finish a year ago coming into the tournament as a No. 2 seed and missing out on the podium.
Hyde will likely find herself in a quarterfinal matchup with No. 4 seed Gabriella Gonzales (30-3) of Phoenix, who finished fifth at 152 pounds last year.
Joining Hyde at 152 pounds is Fredonia/Forestville/Silver Creek’s McKella Hodkin (33-7), who moves up a weight class from last year and comes in as the No. 8 seed and is stacked up against No. 9 Katie Huang (21-6) of Section II Bethlehem.
The winner of that bout does not get much of a reward with top-seed and returning 152-pound runnerup Aaliyah Morrow (20-2) of Section XI Bellport.
Falconer/Cassadaga Valley boasts a pair of girls wrestling in the first two weight classes, beginning with returning state competitor Anastazia Hale (21-8) at 94 pounds. The Cassadaga Valley sophomore has quite the difficult opening match against undefeated No. 4 seed Lorilye Beardsley (27-0) of Section V Avon-Geneseo.
Section I Eastchester junior Tatiana Alexander (15-4) is the top seed at 94 pounds after taking fifth place in the bracket last year.
Cassadaga Valley freshman Maliyah Stone joins Hale for her first trip to the state championships and has earned the No. 7 seed at 100 pounds. She is the favorite in her opening match against Section I Arlington sophomore Nicole Shneyeder (14-6). Stone (28-6) would not get an easy road after that with a potential matchup against No. 2 seed Zoey Jewett of Section III General Brown. The senior Jewett placed fourth at 100 pounds last year as a junior.
On the other side of the 100-pound bracket is the top seed and runnerup from last year Jasmine Brucato (39-3) of Section V Alexander/Pembroke/Byron-Bergen/Honeoye Falls/Lima.
Chautauqua Lake/Panama/Clymer/Brocton/Westfield/Sherman’s Tayler Pinzok (29-9) in the lowest seeded Eagles wrestler, but is still the favorite in her No. 8 seed matchup against No. 9 Amelia Armstrong of Section V Wayne. If Pinzok’s debut at the state championships is a win she will likely face one of the top wrestlers in the tournament, defending state champion Charlie Wylie (26-1) of Section IX Port Jervis. The senior began the year ranked by Sports Illustrated as the No. 4 wrestler in the nation at 110 pounds.
On the other side of the 107-pound bracket, No. 2 Samantha Massey, an eighth-grader out of Section III Mount Markham is ranked No. 14 in the nation at 100 pounds.
Other nationally ranked girls include the top seed at 132 pounds, Haley Gonzales (15-0) of Section VIII Hicksville, who is ranked No. 9 in the state at 120 pounds. Defending 235-pound state champion and returning top seed at that weight, junior Peyton Mullin (31-0) of Section V Dundee/Bradford/Penn Yan is ranked No. 18 in the nation in her class.
The girls will begin Thursday morning at MVP Arena at 9 and finish with finals that same day starting at 5 p.m.
