ELLERY — In the opening minutes of Friday’s Section VI Class C first-round qualifier, Maple Grove’s Liam Colburn missed a dunk attempt and was whistled for a technical foul after hanging on the rim.
Not much went wrong for the Red Dragons after that.
No. 11 Maple Grove used a 25-0 run spanning the first and second quarters to build a commanding 35-5 lead and never looked back en route to a 74-44 win over No. 14 Silver Creek at Maple Grove Jr./Sr. High School.
“I feel like we’ve kind of been building up to this moment for the whole season. I think we’re primed for a potential run in the playoffs,” Maple Grove head coach Graham Soffel said. “I’m super proud of them for how they played.”
The Red Dragons finished 30 of 56 from the field — a 53.5% clip — and matched a season high with 11 3-pointers.

“I always tell them that our offense develops because of our defensive intensity,” Soffel said. “We played great defense in the first half and we were firing on all cylinders after that.”
Next up for the Red Dragons is a prequarterfinal rematch at No. 6 Ellicottville on Tuesday. The Eagles beat Maple Grove 51-38 in last year’s prequarterfinals.
“They have a lot of skilled players,” Soffel said. “It’s going to be a tough matchup, but we’re excited for a rematch against them.”
Colburn, a senior, celebrated his final game on the Maple Grove floor in style Friday. Although he missed his opening dunk attempt, he later gave the Red Dragons a 20-5 lead with 30 seconds remaining in the first quarter on a two-handed stuff that got the crowd into a frenzy.
“I came in and wanted to get at least one dunk. I knew a lot of people were going to be here so I had to get one,” Colburn said. ” … It was just an explosion of energy and hyped everybody up. We were already up a bunch, but it brought up the energy even more.”
“That was a big-time dunk,” Soffel added. “I think for the seniors, it finally sunk in for them that this would be the last time they were going to play here.”
Senior Austin Mason, Colburn and junior Baker Johnson opened the second quarter with consecutive 3-pointers to make it 29-5. Johnson then scored inside before back-to-back buckets from Aiden Dahlberg capped the 25-0 run.
“We played Randolph really well, but most of our games have been really close,” Colburn said when asked if that run was the best his team has played all season. “We’re always going to strive to play at that level.”
Dahlberg, a sophomore, led Maple Grove with 23 points — his eighth straight game of at least 14 points.
“He’s been pretty unstoppable,” Soffel said. “The biggest thing for him is that his attitude has gotten so much better. He’s a lot more confident. He’s just a good kid.”
Colburn added 16 points in his final home game.
“Being able to play in this gym one last time and have the whole community show up and show their support just makes me so happy,” Colburn said. “I love basketball and I love the energy that comes with it.”
Senior Gavin DeLong scored a career-high 18 points in his final game for the Black Knights.
Now the Red Dragons will focus on Tuesday’s date with the Eagles in Ellicottville. The winner of that game will head to No. 3 Gowanda for a quarterfinal next Thursday.
“I’m so excited for a revenge game against Ellicottville,” Colburn said. “I love it. It’s playoff basketball.”
