Steelers fall to Jamestown 3-0 in Game 1 in WNYHSCHL playoffs

The 3-seeded Jamestown Raiders kept the strong start to the playoffs rolling, defeating No. 2 Dunkirk/Fredonia 3-0 in Game 1 of a best-of-three series in the Western New York High School Club Hockey League Mixed School Division playoffs at Steele Hall Arena on Tuesday night.

After a scoreless first period, Noah Smith picked up his first of two assists for the Raiders as he sent a helper to Josiah Armentrout on the eventual game-winning goal.

Trayce Eggleston added an insurance goal from Smith early in the third period and Lucas Arnone capped things off for Jamestown.

Gunnar Anderson was perfect in net for Jamestown to record the shutout.

Game 2 heads to the Northwest Arena in Jamestown on Thursday night at 8:30.

SUNDAY

No. 2 Dunkirk/Fredonia advanced to this week’s best-of-three series with a 10-2 win over No. 7 Cheektowaga in the Western New York High School Club Hockey League Mixed School Division playoffs at Steele Hall on Sunday.

The Steelers’ first tally came just 44 seconds into the first period when Max Hazelton scored, assisted by Amato Fadale and David Girdlestone Jr., to take the early 1-0 lead.

Dunkirk/Fredonia picked up goals by Blake Waterman, assisted by Alex Madurski and Landon Trippi; Mason Miller, assisted by Hazelton; and Ayden Wronski, assisted by Ryan Wegrzynowksi and Hazelton, to close out the strong first period up 4-1.

In the second period, both teams added a goal to their totals. Dunkirk/Fredonia’s goal was scored by Trippi, assisted by Madurski.

Leading 5-2 to start the third, the Steelers exploded for five unanswered goals. Brady Crawford scored unassisted; Trippi scored from Girdlestone; Girdlestone scored unassisted; Waterman scored from Girdlestone and Madurski; and Crawford scored unassisted to complete the 10-2 victory.

Braiden Truby turned away 29 of the 31 shots he faced in net.
