Dunkirk’s Tell, Fredonia’s Bertrando take top honors

Dunkirk and Fredonia split the Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 1 boys basketball title this season.
Now the teams are splitting the league’s most prestigious postseason awards.
The Marauders’ K’Vion Tell was selected as the league’s Most Valuable Player while the Hillbillies’ Nick Bertrando was chosen as the Coach of the Year.
Tell, a junior, averaged 25.8 points, 2.7 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game for Dunkirk, which finished 17-4 overall and 10-2 in Division 1.
Bertrando led Fredonia to a matching 10-2 Division 1 record en route to a 21-3 season that included a Section VI Class A2 championship.

A pair of Hillbillies seniors were named to the league’s First Team. Donovan Dowdy averaged 14.9 points, 8.0 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 1.6 steals and 1.3 blocked shots per game while RJ Koopman averaged 16.8 points, 6.7 assists, 5.0 rebounds and 3.0 steals per game.
Falconer’s Max Parmentier, Salamanca’s Payton Bradley and Southwestern’s Roger Markham made up the rest of the First Team.
All seniors, Parmentier averaged 16.1 points, 8.2 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 2.6 steals and 1.4 blocked shots per game; Bradley averaged 14.9 points, 10.6 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.1 steals per game; and Markham averaged 16.9 points, 4.5 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 2.1 steals per game.
Dunkirk had a pair of players named to the Second Team.
Junior Aries Cheverez averaged 10.2 points, 3.3 assists, 2.8 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game, while senior Malik McCall averaged 10.4 points, 4.3 rebounds, 1.4 blocked shots and 1.3 assists per game.
Fredonia senior Colin Luce was named to the Second Team after averaging 14.8 points, 4.5 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 1.2 steals and 1.1 blocked shots per game.
Olean seniors Joe Mest and My’kel Rivera rounded out the Second Team.
Falconer earned the Team Sportsmanship Award with senior D’Mitri Carlson, the Golden Falcons’ Individual Sportsmanship Award winner.
Olean junior Connor Hagle was named the Byron Norton Award winner.
