Jamestown will face its toughest opponent to date in tonight’s Class AAA Far West Regional.
Says who?
Head coach Billy Miley.
“Fairport kind of has all the pieces,” he said earlier this week.
It would be hard to argue.
The Red Raiders will arrive at Buffalo State Sports Arena for the 5 p.m. tip-off sporting a 21-1 record and a No. 6 ranking in the New York State Sportswriters Association poll. Fairport is coming off a 77-43 dismantling of Rush-Henrietta in the Section V championship game, its fourth title under head coach Scott Fitch, who is in his 25th season.
Leading the way is 6-foot-5 senior forward Noah Meabon, who scored 21 points in the title game. A future Division I volleyball player, he also blocked a bunch of shots and threw down a couple dunks. Alex Grejda, a 6-3 senior guard, added 19 points and Hadi Dergham, a 6-4 senior forward, chipped in 13. The other starters are 5-10 senior Gannon Culver and 6-2 senior Sam Roselli. Jon Roessel, a 6-foot senior, is the sixth man.
“They kind of remind me of some of the better Canisius teams,” Miley said. “They have a point guard who runs the show, a couple forwards who score inside, a couple guys who shoot it and they move the ball really, really well.”
By comparison, the 16th-ranked Red & Green (18-4) advanced to their third straight regional by virtue of a 64-51 semifinal victory over Niagara Falls and a 61-55 championship game win over Health Sciences.
The starting five tonight will consist of 6-foot senior guard Dominic Gonzalez, 6-5 senior forward Elijah Farmer, 6-5 junior forward Karson Milne, 5-7 senior guard Jericho Thagard and 5-10 junior guard Jordan Spencer. Gavin Johnson, a 6-1 senior, will not be available, Miley said.
Gonzalez (19.7) leads Jamestown in scoring, followed by Farmer (16.6), Milne (4.4), Thagard (3.6) and Spencer (2.8). Johnson was averaging 14.5.
“The stage is not going to be too big for the guys,” Miley said. “Defensively, we have to lock in and get stops and, offensively, we need to be patient and give up good shots for great shots.
“The last couple games we’ve met the challenge and, hopefully, we can do it again Friday.”
The winner advances to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association semifinal at 1:30 p.m. next Friday at Visions Veterans Memorial Arena in Binghamton against either William Floyd or Corning-Painted Post.
NOTES: Gonzalez enters the game with 1,127 career points, which is ninth on the school’s all-time list, while Farmer sits at 934, which places him No. 13 all time. … Of Jamestown’s four losses, three of them have come against private schools (St. Joseph’s on Dec. 3, Canisius on Dec. 17 and Nichols on Jan. 31). The other loss was to Orchard Park on Jan. 16. … Miley’s record in his first three seasons as varsity coach stands at 58-13. … Fairport’s lone loss was an 80-58 setback at Penfield on Feb. 13. … Fairport’s Fitch, who was a Division III National Player of the Year and All-American during his playing days at Geneseo, is also a USA Basketball national gold-medal coach (U17 and U16). Among the players he has mentored is Cameron Boozer, now a freshman at top-ranked Duke.
