Fredonia flag football starts season with 63-0 victory
TONAWANDA — Nick Bertrando called the opener of Fredonia’s flag football season a “good start for us.”
It’s hard to argue with that assessment.
Sophia Utegg rushed for two touchdowns and passed for another, and Emma Perry also scored twice to lead the Hillbillies to a 63-0 nonleague victory over Tonawanda at Clint Small Stadium on Friday night.
“Every year we look to reload,” said Bertrando, the Hillbillies head coach. “We have different players in different positions, and girls who have been on the team have been tasked to fill the shoes of those who have left. It’s a long season. We’ll enjoy it and get back to work tomorrow.”
Utegg completed 6 of 12 passes for 39 yards and rushed 10 times for 61 yards, while Perry ran for 72 yards on eight carries. Peyton Wallace and Juliana Snyder accounted for the other offensive touchdowns for Fredonia.
Utegg had five total conversions, Perry had three and Snyder added one.
Defensively, Snyder led the way with two interceptions, including one for a touchdown, defended a pair of passes and collected five flag pulls; Antonella Segura registered three sacks, three tackles for loss and three flag pulls; Adriana Kubacki and Makayla Jierson both had four flag pulls; Peyton Krenzer added three flag pulls; and Megan Ivory (two tackles for loss), Alexa Hennessey and Braelynn Wicks all had two flag pulls.
The Hillbillies will be back in action at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Depew and will travel to Jamestown for a 7 p.m. game Friday at Strider Field.
