BUFFALO — The University of South Florida men’s head basketball coach Bryan Hodgson isn’t the only Jamestown connection to the NCAA Tournament.
In fact, when the Bulls tip off at 1:30 this afternoon at KeyBank Center, Jamestown natives Marty Stockwell and his daughter, Jenna, will be sitting on, or standing near, the Bulls’ bench as members of Hodgson’s staff.
Marty arrived in Tampa last fall after completing his nearly 33-year Jamestown High School teaching/coaching career. He now serves as the Bulls’ director of player personnel.
“What a great opportunity (Hodgson) offered me,” Marty said before his move to Tampa last October. “I’ve been lucky enough to have coached him, we’ve stayed friends and he knows I would have the ability, the want, the desire to be a coach and be committed to the program. He’s the reason I’m here. It’s that simple.”
Meanwhile, Jenna is a graduate assistant, focusing her attention on analytics. The 2021 JHS and 2024 University of Alabama graduate served similar roles in Hodgson’s previous coaching stops with the Crimson Tide and at Arkansas State.
Rooting Marty, Jenna and Hodgson on from Jamestown all season has been Beth Stockwell, Marty’s wife and Jenna’s mom. In her final year of teaching at Southwestern Central School, Beth won’t have to travel far to root on No. 11 South Florida against No. 6 Louisville today.
Ultimately, she will move to Tampa this summer upon her retirement in June.
