JAMESTOWN — No. 1 Wilson had final scores in the 40s just twice this year.

On Tuesday, the Lakemen struggled to get to 30.

No. 4 Westfield held Wilson to 11-of-61 shooting from the field, including 2 of 29 on 3-point attempts as the Wolverines upset the Lakemen 40-30 in a Section VI Class C semifinal at Jamestown Community College’s Physical Education Complex.

“We’re not bad either,” Westfield head coach Nolan Swanson said when asked how they held Wilson to just 30 points. “We run a ridiculously hard schedule for a Class C team. We play a bunch of A’s and B’s.”

The win sends Westfield into Saturday’s 4 p.m. final against No. 2 Global Concepts, which beat No. 6 Ellicottville 56-50 in Tuesday’s second semifinal. The Gators beat the Wolverines 59-43 in a nonleague matchup Feb. 1 in Westfield.

“We took a whipping from them earlier this year. We saw that they execute what they do to their good players really well,” Swanson said of the Gators. “Hopefully, if we face them, we will have learned something.”

Six-foot-6 Grant Beadle led the Wolverines with 12 points, 16 rebounds and five blocked shots, winning a matchup against Wilson’s 6-foot-5 big man Shamus George, who finished with 8 points.

“For us to have a chance, I thought Grant was going to have to get his average and we were going to need a guy to get going on the 3-point line,” Swanson said. “That wasn’t the case.”

Westfield led throughout, including by 13 after a 12-0 run to start the second quarter. Wilson made it a nine-point game at halftime and closed to within five just 44 seconds into the third quarter on a dunk by Ryan Hough.

The Wolverines’ Brayden Paddock hit a 3-pointer with 5:31 left in the period to make it 30-20, a lead that it maintained entering the fourth quarter.

Aidan Neumann, who ended his Wilson career with 1,400 points, hit a 3-pointer early in the fourth quarter to again make it a five-point game.

“He’s just so shifty and very persistent. He re-attacks. You think you stay in front of him and then he goes again,” Swanson said of Neumann. “We went to a little triangle and had immediate help. We were able to keep him locked up a bit.”

After Nolan Anderson scored for Westfield, Neumann made a free throw to make it a six-point game before the Wolverines’ Logan Baum hit his second 3-pointer of the game to stretch the lead back to nine.

“Just enough in a game like this that was that low scoring,” Swanson said of Westfield’s four 3-pointers. “Some would call it a dog fight and some might call it a pillow fight based on the score. It doesn’t feel like that when you are in the moment, it just feels like you are out there battling.”

The Lakemen got no closer than eight the rest of the way, missing their final 15 shots from the field, including 10 of them from 3-point range.

“We have some quick guys who can play man,” Swanson said. “We can stunt a funny defense and double team a tough player.”

Now Westfield will look for the ninth sectional title in program history and second in a row Saturday when it takes on a Global Concepts program that has only been around since 2002 and is looking for the first championship in its history.

NOTES: Braylon Swanson had 9 points, seven assists, six rebounds and four steals while Nolan Anderson grabbed seven rebounds for Westfield, which shot 16 of 43 from the field, including 4 of 23 from 3-point range, and turned the ball over 17 times. … Neumann finished with 11 points for Wilson, which turned the ball over 12 times.
