Fredonia boys win CCAA golf title on Lake Course
Hillbillies edge Randolph for spot at sectionals
CHAUTAUQUA — Despite cold, windy, rainy conditions, some pretty important high school golf was played Wednesday.
Fredonia and Randolph squared off in the Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association boys team championship on Chautauqua Golf Club’s Lake Course to determine the league’s representative in the Section VI championships.
Randolph’s Matt Beaver earned medalist honors, but the Hillbillies earned the title 152-161 to compete for the sectional crown Monday, May 11 at Shelridge Country Club in Medina.
Braden Truby led Fredonia with a 36, followed by Jordan Kelly (38), Ryan Kelly (39), Grant Abbey (39) and Kason Malkowski (47). Only the top-four golfers are counted in the team score.
Beaver shot a 35 to lead the Cardinals, followed by Cody Slade (41), Brayden Beaver (42), Jaxon Morrison (43) and Broden Brooks (45).
“I’m not surprised, but I am impressed,” Fredonia head coach Ross Conti said about the scores shot in less-than-ideal conditions. “It was brutal. It was a real mountain to climb today.”
Fredonia will take on team winners from the Erie County Interscholastic Conference, Niagara Orleans League and Niagara Frontier League alongside the individual state qualifier May 11. Those leagues all play golf in the fall.
“I’ve tried for a dozen years to get us moved into the fall with the rest of the section,” Conti said. “You have everything in the world going on in the spring — prom, musicals, field trips, etc. — there are multiple reasons not to play spring golf.”
