Fredonia sweeps Gators in baseball Friday
ALLEGANY — Playing as the home team in Game 1, and down 3-1 in the fourth inning, Fredonia (4-0, 2-0) rallied to take a lead it would not relinquish in Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 1 baseball against Allegany-Limestone on Friday.
Hillbillies starting pitcher Matt Cowan came up with the bases loaded and two outs. He delivered a game-tying, two-run single. He then stole second base to put two runners in scoring position for Brady Crawford — who promptly gave the Hillbillies the lead with a two-run single of his own.
Fredonia then put the game away with an eight-run fifth inning, extending their lead to 10, 13-3, ending the game via mercy rule.
Cowan and Crawford each had two hits, two RBIs, and two runs scored. Colin Luce added two hits, an RBI and a run scored. Pauly Tabone, Luka Paoletta and Jack Frame all scored twice.
Cowan earned the win, striking out six over four innings. Luce, who entered a 5-3 game in the top of the fifth inning, struck out the side to earn the save.
In Game 2, Fredonia pitchers Luce (two innings, three strikeouts), Gavin Piazza (two innings, three strikeouts) and Henry Conroy (one inning, two strikeouts) combined on a one-hit shutout, winning 13-0 again in five innings.
The Gators’ (3-5, 0-2) only baserunners were a first-inning single and a third-inning walk, with neither runner advancing past first base.
Luce (double) and Tabone each scored three times while Crawford had another two-run single and scored twice. Cowan, Rocco Muscarella, Issiah Ruiz, Frame and Max Hazelton each scored.
