Double trouble

OBSERVER Photos by Tim Frank Silver Creek/Forestville's Chymerah Genovese races to victory in the 200 meters at the Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association track and field championships on Saturday at Salamanca High School. Genovese won both the 100 and 200 meters.

OLEAN — Southwestern, Allegany-Limestone and Clymer/Sherman/Panama claimed team titles in both the girls and boys divisions following the completion of the second day of the Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Track & Field Championships at Salamanca High School on Saturday.

Helping make that possible were some fine individual performances by members of those respective schools.

For the Southwestern girls, who finished with 162 points to outlast second-place Olean (131) in Division 1, M’Kenzie Zavala won the 400-meter hurdles (1:08.97), and the 3,200-meter relay (10:18.59), made up of Tryniti Card, Lillian Weikel, Avery Johnson and Marlana Cresanti, was also victorious.

The Allegany-Limestone girls captured the Division 2 championship with 174 points to outdistance second-place Portville (125), despite not having anyone collect an individual crown Saturday.

And, finally, Clymer/Sherman/Panama won the Division 3 title with 148 points. Maple Grove (102) followed in second place. Savannah Whitney was the headliner for the Wolfpack with a win in the 1,500 meters (5:06.75).

Fredonia's Nathan Keefe races to a win in the 110-meter hurdles on Saturday.

Individually, claiming double wins on the day was Chymerah Genovese of Silver Creek/Forestville in the 100 meters (13.07) and the 200 meters (26.68). She was also a member of the champion 1,600-meter relay with Emily Bain, Molly Shaw and Samantha Timmermann (4:17.38). In addition, the Black Knights won the 400-meter relay (52.87) to cap a fine weekend.

Randolph’s Serena Smith (400 meters, 1:00.36); Maple Grove’s Sydney Simmons (100-meter hurdles, 16.86); and West Valley’s Olivia Harmony (2,000-meter steeplechase, 7:54.12) also were individual winners on Saturday.

For the boys, Southwestern (116) held off Fredonia (102.5) and Chautauqua Lake/Westfield (100.5) for the Division 1 crown; Allegany-Limestone (167) just got by Salamanca (160) in Division 2; and Clymer/Sherman/Panama (142) squeezed past Maple Grove (124) and Randolph (124) in Division 3.

The lone double individual winner Saturday was Xazavier Escobar of Salamanca in the 100 meters (11.29) and the 200 meters (22.33).

Maple Grove’s Ty Oste (400 meters, 51.53) and Ethan Verbosky (1,600 meters, 4:20.29); Fredonia’s Nathan Keefe (110-meter hurdles, 15.67); Frewsburg’s Noah Erickson (400-meter hurdles, 56.26); and Allegany-Limestone’s Nolan Wilczewski (3,000-meter steeplechase, 10:14.83) all won their respective events as well Saturday.
