Fredonia puts pressure on Gators in D1
ALLEGANY — Fredonia junior Isabella Buckley had the game of her life Saturday.
Clinging to a 3-2 lead, Buckley snared a hard groundball at third base and threw across the infield for the second out of the bottom of the seventh inning to help preserve the Hillbillies’ 3-2 Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 1 softball win over first-place Allegany-Limestone on Saturday.
Fredonia (9-2, 8-2) struck first as Naomi Muck led off the top of the first inning with a triple and scored on Callie Draggett’s RBI single.
The Gators (10-2, 9-1) tied the game in the bottom of the first inning as Kailey Truman tripled and scored on an error.
The Hillbillies regained the lead in the second. McKenna Crawford led off with another triple and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Gia Muscarella.
Allegany-Limestone nearly tied the game in the fourth inning when a throw went into left field after a steal of third base, but Muscarella backed up the play and threw out the Gators runner at home.
In Allegany-Limestone’s half of the fifth inning, Riley Sudbrook and Peyton Truman singled before a walk to Kailey Truman loaded the bases. Summer Rhow followed with a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 2-all.
But in the top of the seventh inning, Buckley led off with a home run to left-center field to give Fredonia the lead for good.
McKella Hodkin earned the win in the circle for the Hillbillies, scattering eight hits while walking four and striking out two. Crawford finished with three hits at the plate.
For the Gators, Kailey Truman, who struck out 16 in a one-hitter the first time the teams met, allowed seven hits and struck out five while walking one Saturday.
Each team has two league games left. Fredonia travels to Jamestown today and hosts Southwestern on Wednesday while Allegany-Limestone visits Dunkirk on Wednesday and hosts Olean on Friday.
