Fredonia rolls into semifinals

FREDONIA — No. 4 Fredonia pounded out 14 hits with all nine starters having at least one en route to a 13-1 five-inning win over No. 5 Royalton-Hartland in a Section VI Class B softball quarterfinal Thursday.

The Hillbillies scored two runs in the first inning and four more in the second before a six-run third inning. During that frame, 10 batters came to the plate and Fredonia had seven hits. The Hillbillies finished their scoring with a run in the fifth to invoke the mercy rule.

Naomi Muck had three hits, including a triple, and scored four runs; Gia Muscarella had three hits, including a double, and scored a run; Anna Delcamp had two hits; Ava Muck tripled; and McKella Hodkin doubled.

Hodkin tossed a four-hitter with seven strikeouts and two walks in the circle.

Fredonia will host No. 8 Tonawanda in a semifinal Tuesday at 5 p.m.

RHINEHART TOSSES GEM FOR FALCONER

ELLICOTTVILLE — Emily Rhinehart threw a two-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts and four walks as No. 5 Falconer beat No. 4 Ellicottville 7-0 in a Section VI Class C quarterfinal Thursday.

The teams split a pair of regular-season matchups, but Ellicottville won the Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 4 title with a 9-1 league mark while the Golden Falcons finished 8-2.

That didn’t matter Thursday.

Falconer jumped ahead in the top of the first inning when Rhinehart singled with one out, went to second on an error and scored on Hannah Melquist’s two-out RBI single.

The Golden Falcons made it 3-0 in the third. Giada Schauman led off with a walk, stole second and went to third on Nylah Sharpe’s single. After Sharpe stole second, Rhinehart hit a two-run single to right field.

Emily Zaranek doubled and scored on Rachael Swanson’s RBI single in the fourth; and with two outs in the seventh, Sharpe and Rhinehart reached on errors before Mylie Zaranek hit a three-run home run to center field.

Three first three batters of the game reached for Ellicottville. Ande Northrup walked, Riley Whitmer singled and Katie Lafferty walked, but Rhinehart got out of the inning with a pair of strikeouts and a groundout. She gave up just a single and two walks the rest of the way.

Emily Zaranek finished 3 for 4 with two doubles and a run scored; Rhinehart was 3 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs scored; and Melquist was 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI.

Falconer will travel to No. 1 Wilson for a 5 p.m. semifinal Tuesday. The Lakewomen beat No. 8 Gowanda 2-1 on Thursday.

FLINT ELIMINATES BLACK KNIGHTS WITH ONE-HITTER

BARKER — Sophomore Madyson Flint threw a one-hitter with 15 strikeouts and no walks to lead No. 2 Barker past No. 7 Silver Creek 5-0 in a Class C quarterfinal.

The Black Knights’ Rylee Weiskerger broke up the no-hit bid with a two-out single in the fourth inning.

By then, Silver Creek was trailing 2-0. The Bulldogs’ Fallyn Mescall led off the third inning with a walk and Aine Davis followed with a bunt single. After a wild pitch, Kaylee Stoll hit an RBI single. After a strikeout, Flint hit a sacrifice fly to right field.

Barker tacked on a run in the fifth inning. Davis singled with one out, went to third on a flyout and scored on a wild pitch.

The Bulldogs’ final two runs came on Lexi Brazzell’s two-run single in the sixth to score Peyton Bradley and Elise Monaco.

Weiskerger tossed a seven-hitter with five strikeouts and a walk in the circle for the Black Knights.

Barker will host No. 6 Clymer/Sherman/Panama in a 5 p.m. semifinal Tuesday. The Wolfpack beat No. 3 Chautauqua Lake 6-3 on Tuesday.

WILSON RALLIES PAST GOWANDA

WILSON — No. 1 Wilson erased a 1-0 third-inning deficit to beat No. 8 Gowanda 2-1 in a Class C quarterfinal.

The Panthers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third when Addison Kota tripled with two outs and scored on Corrina John’s RBI double.

The Lakewomen tied the game in the fourth. Katie Hardy led off with a single, went to second on a wild pitch, took third on a groundout and scored on an error.

In the sixth, Abbie Faery led off with a walk, stole second, took third on an error and scored on Taylor Ernest’s two-out RBI single.

Gowanda was retired in order in the top of the seventh on a groundout and two popouts.

Kota threw a three-hitter with five strikeouts and four walks for Gowanda while Hardy threw a four-hitter with two strikeouts and two walks.
