Hornets cruise back to ‘D’ final

FORESTVILLE — No. 1 Forestville scored five runs in the first inning and seven more in the third on its way to a 13-1 Section VI Class D semifinal softball win over No. 4 Pine Valley on Tuesday.

Six batters had two hits apiece for the Hornets, who will take on No. 3 Maple Grove in the Class D title game at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Olean.

Emily Lillie went 2 for 4 with a triple, an RBI and two runs scored; Kaylee Adamczak was 2 for 2 with a double and two RBIs; Alexandra Kerstetter was 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored; Carilene Sliwa went 2 for 4 with an RBI and two runs scored; Elizabeth Case was 2 for 4 with two runs scored; and Ava Schwerk went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and a run scored for Forestville.

Kerstetter threw a five-inning four-hitter with seven strikeouts and no walks.

For the Panthers, Victoria Erickson doubled and scored a run while Sandy Ivett, Ava West and Lily Sawatis each had a single.

GAME-SAVING CATCH ADVANCES FALCONER

WILSON — Mylie Zaranek made a game-saving catch at the center field fence to end the game as No. 5 Falconer beat No. 1 Wilson 4-3 in a Class C semifinal.

Trailing by a run entering the bottom of the seventh inning, Kylee Elia led off with a single to left field. Elia then moved to second and third on a pair of groundouts. Facing a 2-1 pitch, Lucy Madan lifted a flyball to center field that was tracked down by Zaranek for the final out.

Emily Rhinehart earned the win in the circle, allowing five hits and three runs (one earned) while striking out 11 and walking one. She also hit a batter.

The Golden Falcons took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Nylah Sharpe led off with a single and Rhinehart followed with a sacrifice bunt before Mylie Zaranek hit a sacrifice fly. Hannah Melquist then doubled, went to third on a passed ball and scored on Emily Zaranek’s RBI single.

The Lakewomen made it 2-1 in the bottom of the second, but Falconer answered with another run in the top of the third when Rhinehart singled and scored on Melquist’s two-out triple to center field.

Wilson tied the game 3-3 in the bottom of the fourth before the Golden Falcons took the lead for good in the top of the fifth. Sharpe led off by reaching on an error and later scored on a wild pitch.

Rhinehart retired the Lakewomen in order in the fifth and pitched around a one-out walk in the sixth before Zaranek saved the day in the seventh.

Falconer will take on No. 2 Barker in the Class C championship game at 5 p.m. Friday in Olean.

FLINT STYMIES WOLFPACK

BARKER — A two-run bottom of the sixth inning broke a 1-1 tie as No. 2 Barker beat No. 6 Clymer/Sherman/Panama 3-1 in a Class C semifinal.

Madyson Flint and Peyton Bradley hit back-to-back singles with one out in the sixth for the Bulldogs. After a flyout for the second out, Flint stole third and scored on an error. Bradley advanced to third on the same error and eventually scored on Melodi Murphy’s RBI double.

Flint then struck out the side in the top of the seventh as Barker advanced to Friday’s 5 p.m. title game against Falconer in Olean.

Flint finished the day with a two-hitter while striking out 13 and walking none. Sixty-three of the 75 pitches she threw were strikes.

Elli Bodamer tossed a four-hitter with nine strikeouts and two walks for the Wolfpack. Just one of the three runs she allowed was earned.

Clymer/Sherman/Panama’s lone run came in the top of the fourth inning. Bodamer hit a two-out double and Addie Wiggers followed with an RBI double to score courtesy runner Baylee White.

Those would end up being the only two base runners for the Wolfpack.

TRIM’S GRAND SLAM IS EXCLAMATION POINT

FRANKLINVILLE — No. 3 Maple Grove broke open a 5-2 game with a seven-run seventh inning to beat No. 2 Franklinville 12-2 in a Class D semifinal.

The Red Dragons scored six runs with two outs, including Dani Trim’s grand slam in the seventh inning. Savannah Weart had two doubles and two RBIs; Savannah Rambacher had three hits, including a double; Bry Cornell had two hits; and Megan McGee had a two-run double.

Meg Ryan tossed a five-hitter with nine strikeouts and two walks.

Kaelyann Graves Decker struck out nine and walked two for the Panthers. Offensively, Grace Cornell had two singles while Taylor Chase and Makenzie Chase and Mya Sullivan each added a hit.

Maple Grove will take on No. 1 Forestville in the Class D title game at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Olean.
