Nelson captures US Open crown
CHAUTAUQUA — The Wednesday Travel League held its first major of the season, the U.S. Open, at Chautauqua Golf Club’s Hill Course. After the previous three events had been canceled/rescheduled due to weather conditions, league play was finally able to resume.
Jeff Nelson was the overall winner after shooting the low round of 81. Josh Hilliker (83) and Ed Tofil (84) finished second and third, respectively. Nelson now has two major victories to his credit. Jake Harp and Dan Tofil led the front nine with 39s. Nelson led the back nine with 39.
In the B Flight, Tom Sacilowski successfully defended his 2025 title after a second-hole tiebreaker over Dave Wallace. The low round by a senior was recorded by Dennis Gawronski Sr. The winner of the Bruce “Java” Chrabasz Commissioner’s Award was Don Kujawa.
Untied birdies were recorded by: A Flight — Hilliker (No. 2), Harp (No. 3), Ed Tofil (No. 12) and Pete Pinkoski (No. 18); B Flight — Sacilowski (Nos. 1 and 15), Wallace (Nos. 3 and 18), Gawronski (No. 6), Ryan Tofil (No. 8) and Bob Kujawa (No. 14).
Closest to the pin were: Phil Hopkins (No. 2) and Nelson (Nos. 7, 13 and 15). Winners of the Steeplechase were: Nelson in A Flight and Pat Weaver in B Flight. Winners of the Par-3 contest were: Nelson in A Flight (plus-1, won on a tiebreaker) and Sacilowski in B Flight (plus-2).
Top point winners were: Nelson (61), Sacilowski (35), Hilliker (21) and Wallace (20). Season points leaders (through three events): 1. Hilliker (78), 2. Nelson (61), 3. Ed Tofil (58), 4. This week the league will play Maplehurst Country Club with a 10 a.m. modified shotgun start. Golfers can inquire about openings until noon Monday.
On Wednesday, June 10, the league will hold its 5th annual Uncle Buck Classic honoring the memory of Edward “Butch” Mackowiak. It will be played at Chautauqua Golf Club’s Lake Course with a 10 a.m. start. Golfers can inquire/sign up at 716-785-2291.
