Westfield walks off against Wolfpack

WESTFIELD — Joey Russo drove in Parker Covert with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning as Westfield walked off as 5-4 winners over Clymer/Sherman/Panama in Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 2 baseball Thursday.

The victory moved the Wolverines to 8-3 overall and in the league, a half-game behind first-place Maple Grove (9-4, 8-2) heading into the final games of the season. Westfield and the Wolfpack (4-10, 4-7) will play their final league game Monday in Panama while Maple Grove and Brocton/Cassadaga Valley (7-6, 6-4) will play a home-and-home series scheduled for today and Saturday.

Clymer/Sherman/Panama’s Johnny Abers induced a groundout to start the bottom of the seventh Thursday before Covert reached on an infield single. Ian Kindermann followed with a four-pitch walk and Joel Stein singled to left field to load the bases. Then, on a 1-1 pitch, Russo singled to left field and Covert raced home with the winning run.

The Wolfpack opened the scoring in the second when Micaleb Anderson led off with a walk and later scored on an error.

The Wolverines took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second. Grant Beadle walked with one out and Covert singled with two outs before Kindermann hit an RBI single to right field. Covert scored one batter later when Stein reached on an error.

Clymer/Sherman/Panama tied the game in the third as Rey Rodriguez walked with one out and scored on Max White’s two-out RBI double. In the fourth, Abers was hit by a pitch with one out and stole second before scoring on Jeffery Perry’s single to center field.

Westfield tied the game again in the fourth when Covert led off with a single, went to second on a walk to Kindermann and advanced to third on a Stein single before Russo hit an RBI infield single.

The Wolfpack took another lead in the fifth when Gavin Burchanowski walked with one out, stole second, went to third on an error and scored on a wild pitch.

But once again, the Wolverines tied it an inning later. Nolan Anderson led off with a walk and Jack Bratton was hit by a pitch with one out. Westfield tried to move the runners with a bunt, but Anderson was thrown out at third for the second out. Kindermann followed with an RBI single to right field to make it 4-4.

Stein retired the next six Wolfpack batters in order to set up the bottom of the seventh.

Covert went 3 for 4 with three runs scored; Stein and Russo each had a pair of hits and Anderson doubled for the Wolverines. Stein struck out 12 and walked three in a three-hitter. Just two of the four runs he allowed were earned.

White had two of the Wolfpack’s three hits. Abers struck out four in 6 1/3 innings on the mound.
