Area athletes shine at Class track and field finals

RANDOLPH — The Southwestern track and field teams shined in the Section VI Class C track and field championships on Friday at Randolph High School. The girls dominated the competition with seven victories en route to claiming the team title with 134.5 points, while the boys won three events and finished second to Tapestry with 84 points.

The Southwestern girls had two double-winners with Marlana Cresanti winning the 200 (26.09) and 400 meters (59.32), then Mikayla Johnson claimed the throwing titles with wins in shot put (49-9.75) and discus (125-10). The Trojans also won the 1,600 and 3,200 relays, while M’Kenzie Zavala took home the 100 hurdles (16.62) title.

Reece Addesa was a double-winner for Akron, claiming the 1,500 (5:04.29) and the 800 (2:29.33). Silver Creek/Forestville’s Molly Shaw picked up a win in the 400 hurdles (1:06.52) and Falconer/Cassadaga Valley’s Mary Lundmark won the pole vault (9-0).

The Southwestern boys were powered by wins from Ryan Ohl in the 400 (48.92), Leo Kavic in the shot put (50-2.50) and Tyler McIntyre in the discus (144-8). Ohl’s victory surpassed the state’s super standard, punching his ticket to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Class C championships next month.

Tapestry bested the Trojans with a team total of 105 points and the driving force was quadruple-winner Yuset Bandomo Bosch claiming the 3,000 steeplechase (10:26.02), 1,600 (4:59.64), 800 (2:07.97) and the 3,200 (10:28.37).

Nathan Mays was a double-winner for Silver Creek/Forestville taking the 110 hurdles (15.81) and high jump (6-2), while Sam Bowers won the 200 (22.73) for the Black Knights. Tysen McCaa won a pair of events for Royalton-Hartland, taking the long jump (22-4) and triple jump (42-4).

Max Parmentier completed the Falconer/Cassadaga Valley sweep in the pole vault with a jump of 12-9.

CLASS B

EAST AURORA — Nathan Keefe turned in the top individual performances among area athletes at the Section VI Class B Track & Field Championship on Friday.

The Fredonia senior placed second in the 110-meter hurdles (15.63) and third in the 400-meter hurdles (1:00.26) to help the Hillbillies to eighth place in the 14-team field with 28 points.

Solomon McKnatt turned in a third-place effort in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (1:00.26) to round out the top performances for the Fredonia boys.

Meanwhile, the Chautauqua Lake boys, who finished in 10th place with 16 points, received a third-place finish by Michael Horvath in the triple jump (43-2.5); a fifth-place finish by the 1,600-meter relay team of Travis Horvath, Noah Tuah, Paxton Liddell and Wyatt Stroth (3:34.43); and sixth-place efforts by Lucas Horvath and Tuah in the 800 meters (2:08.63) and the 400 meters (54.47) respectively.

East Aurora was the team winner for the boys with 127 points, followed by Health Science with 81.

The Fredonia girls’ 1,600-meter relay and the Hillbillies’ Alessandra Bugaj had the top finishes among area athletes.

Mariella Russo, Aria Russo, Isabella Czekansi and Charis LaBarr placed second in the relay (4:18.54), while Bugaj was second in the triple jump (34-7.5).

Placing third for Fredonia were LaBarr in the 400 meters (1:00.74), Mariella Russo in the high jump (4-8), Jordan Morris in the shot (28-5.75) and Czekanski in the 2,000-meter steeplechase (8:29.20). Fourth-place finishes were recorded by Mariella Russo in the 400-meter hurdles (1:13.08), while Elizabeth Saunders was fifth in the high jump (4-6) and the team of Estella Tonelli, Madelyn Krakowiak, Mihiro Sahara and Aria Russo were fifth in the 3,200-meter relay.

For the Chautauqua Lake girls, Meredith Lendt was third in the 1,500 meters (5:17.31) and in the 3,000 meters (11:21.44); the 400-meter relay of Olivia Aman, Addison Chess, Lily Otto and Kadence Phillips was fourth (53.0); and Liiberty Marring was fifth in the discus (76-7).

The Fredonia girls finished in fifth place in the 12-team field with 46.5 points, while the Eagles placed eighth with 19 points. Springville was first with 146 points, followed by East Aurora with 106.

CLASS A

DUNKIRK — The Dunkirk girls had a strong showing on their home turf in the Section VI Class A track and field championships on Saturday, taking fifth place with several top three finishes.

Dunkirk senior Hanan Mohamad Narvaez had the best finish for the Marauders taking second in the 2,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 8:06.24.

Freshman Chianti Lopez added a pair of third-place finishes for the Marauders in the 100 (12.67) and the 200 (26.25). Junior Khloe Munson took seventh in the 100 (13.22), while eighth-grader Jordan Thomas Smith matched that placement for the boys with a time of 11.56.

Ryder Yerico added another seventh place for the boys in the 200 (23.40).

Several Marauders turned in great performances in the field events including Malik McCall taking third in high jump (5-10), Liam McQuiggan fourth in triple jump (39-8), Leona Crane claimed fourth in pole vault (8-9) and Jazmin Bultron took fifth (8-3) and Aidri Vega finished fifth in the shot put (27-1.50).

Dunkirk also scored team points in three relays, the group of Andrea Lugo Rosario, Danielle Felt, Lopez and Crane placed fourth in the 1,600 relay (4:32.25). Then Dunkirk took fifth in both the boys 400 relay (45.53) with Liam McQuiggan, Yerico, Isiah Durling, Jordan Thomas Smith and the 1,600 relay (3:38.89) with Zain Thomas, Durling, Anniel Medina Vega and Yerico.

The Iroquois girls ran away with the team title at 171 points, while the Iroquois boys shared first with Amherst at 115 points.
