Division 2’s finest

As late as early March of this year, Jackson Crowell didn’t know where he’d be playing high school baseball.
Less than four months later, the Cassadaga Valley junior was named the Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 2 co-Player of the Year along with Chautauqua Lake senior Devin Hewes.
Joining up with Brocton, which shared the league title with Maple Grove and Westfield, Crowell hit .359 with eight doubles, a triple and a home run while driving in 27 runs and scoring 18. On the mound, the right-hander went 4-2 with a 3.00 earned run average, striking out 67 batters in 39 2-3 innings while holding opposing hitters to a .215 average.
Hewes went 7-2 with a 1.54 ERA while striking out 99 batters in 46 2-3 innings for the Eagles. He held opposing hitters to just a .096 average and walked only 16. At the plate, Hewes hit .244 with two doubles and two triples while driving in eight runs and scoring 22.
Crowell was joined on the First Team by senior teammates Chris Furman and Anthony Gatto, as well as sophomore Nico Blattenberger. Furman hit .237 with a double while driving in 10 runs and scoring 10. Gatto hit .368 with a double while driving in 14 runs and scoring 18. He also went 5-1 on the mound with a 2.99 ERA while striking out 49 batters in 44 2-3 innings. Blattenberger hit .432 with three doubles while driving in nine runs and scoring eight.

Chautauqua Lake's Devin Hewes
Maple Grove also placed four players on the First Team in senior Kyle Yohe, sophomores Gavin Darr and Zeke Padd, and freshman Aleck Garrett. Yohe hit .306 with 17 runs batted in; Darr hit a team-best .482 with eight doubles, two home runs and 16 RBIs while striking out 54 batters in 46 1-3 innings and pitching to a 2.90 ERA; Padd hit .359 with seven doubles and 13 RBIs; and Garrett went 3-1 with a 3.40 ERA while hitting .255 with 14 RBIs.
The final co-champion, Westfield, also had four players named to the First Team in senior Joel Stein, juniors Logan Baum and Trent Ramm, and sophomore Joey Russo. Stein pitched to a 1.98 ERA while striking out 59 in 42 1-3 innings and holding opposing batters to a .133 average. He also hit .200 with two doubles while driving in three runs and scoring 16. Baum hit .190 with a double while driving in eight runs and scoring seven. He struck out 17 in 19 1-3 innings on the mound, holding opposing batters to a .293 average. Ramm hit a team-best .389 with two doubles while driving in 13 runs and scoring eight. Russo hit .261 with a double while driving in eight runs and scoring nine. He struck out 43 in 26 1-3 innings while holding opposing batters to a .168 average.
Chautauqua Lake’s only other First-Team all-star in addition to Hewes was junior catcher Logan Fuller, who hit .245 with three doubles while driving in nine runs and scoring 20.
Clymer/Sherman/Panama, which earned the Team Sportsmanship Award, had a pair of First-Team all-stars in junior Gavin Burchanowski and sophomore Max White. Burchanowski hit .462 with four doubles, two triples and a home run while driving in six runs and scoring 28. He also went 2-1 with a 3.47 ERA while striking out 37 in 42 1-3 innings on the mound. White hit .327 with two doubles while driving in 13 runs and scoring 14.
Frewsburg also had a pair of First-Team all-stars in sophomores Drake Beckstrom and Gavin Weaver. Beckstrom hit .275 with 20 RBIs and struck out 55 on the mound while Weaver hit .382 with 33 RBIs and struck out 49 on the mound.
