CHURCHVILLE — When Fredonia’s Ryan Kelly reached the 2025 New York State Public High School Athletic Association Golf Championships as a junior, he fell off in his second round and dropped to 46th.
While Kelly did not shoot as low as his Day 1 score of 74 from a year ago, the Fredonia senior was able to match this Sunday’s score of 77 during Monday’s final round and achieved a two-day total of 154, going 12-over and sharing 31st with eight golfers at Mill Creek Golf Club. Kelly’s matching 77s earned him the highest finish of all the local boys competing in the state championships.
Section VIII Manhasset’s Ryan Liu provided a 136, going 6-under and winning the championship on a tiebreaker over Charles Nevin of Section VIII Friends Academy.
Jamestown senior Tyler Salvaggio had a similar finish to Kelly last season with a difficult Monday in which he added eight strokes to his total score. Salvaggio shot 76 on Sunday, the lowest among the local boys, but dropped into a tie for 54th place with an 84 and total score of 160.
Fellow Jamestown senior Evan Maloney also had a case of the Mondays with his score being 12 strokes more than on Sunday, dropping him to a two-day total of 168 and a tie for 76th with four golfers. His Sunday 78 was better than both of his rounds last year as a junior and helped him jump seven spots.
Randolph senior Cody Slade finished with a two-day score of 175 and tied with three golfers for 87th.
Kelly tied with Lewiston-Porter’s Philip Monahan as the top Section VI golfer, but Monahan had the lower round of the tournament with a 75 on Monday.
