High scores at challenging Beechwood GC

FAIRVIEW, Pa. — The Wednesday Travel League played the always-challenging Beechwood Golf Course, which lived up to its reputation as the field had its highest scoring average of the season.

Josh Hilliker rode an impressive 1-under par 35 on the front nine en route to the low round of 84. Jeff Nelson finished second with 87 and John Waterman was third with 88. Hilliker’s 35 led the front nine while Waterman and Phil Hopkins led the back nine with 42s.

Al Etzel and Dave Franklin won the B and C Flights, respectively. Ron Szach shot the low round by a senior. The winner of the Bruce “Java” Chrabasz Commissioner’s Award was Bob Kujawa.

Untied birdies were recorded by: A Flight, Hilliker (No. 9), Nelson (No. 10), Waterman (Nos. 14 and 15), Jeff Marsowicz (No. 16) and amateur Carter Crabtree (No. 17); B Flight, Mike Willoughby (No. 8), Hopkins (Nos. 10 and 13), Tom Sacilowski (No. 15) and Dave Wallace (No. 18); and C Flight, Tom Destro (No. 1), Franklin (No. 5), Pat Weaver (No. 6), Dennis Gawronski Sr. (No. 9) and Tim Walawender (No. 14).

Closest to the pin were: Hilliker (No. 2), Gawronski (No. 4), Hopkins (No. 10) and Pete Pinkoski (No. 15). Winners of the steeplechase were Hilliker (A Flight), Sacilowski (B) and Joe Bifaro (C).

Top point winners were: Hopkins (40), Hilliker and Sacilowski (32 apiece) and Nelson (24). Season points leaders (through eight events): 1. Hilliker (265), 2. Sacilowski (172), 3. Hopkins (112), 4. Nelson (108), 5. Ed Tofil (95), 6. Willoughby (88), 7. Pinkoski (83), 8. Wallace (63), 9. Bill Emery and Waterman (56 apiece). Josh Hilliker moved past Gary Haase for 10th place on the all-time points list. John Waterman played in his 700th career event, most all-time.

This week the league plays Scenic Heights in Wattsburg, Pennsylvania. The first group tees off at 9:30 a.m.
