ALDEN — Nathan Mays turned in an impressive weekend at the Section VI Track & Field State Qualifier.

The senior, who was representing the Silver Creek/Forestville team, totaled 3,564 points to easily capture the pentathlon at Alden High School on Saturday.

After winning the 110-meter hurdles, the high jump and shot put on Friday, Mays placed second in the long jump and fourth in the 1,500 meters 24 hours later to breeze to the title, well ahead of second-place Cameron Christiano of Depew, who finished with 2,872 points.

Mays’ total — which is second in the state this year — broke the local record of Clymer/Sherman/Panama’s John Swabik, who accumulated 3,527 points in 2021. Swabik will compete in the NCAA Championships this coming week for Kansas University.

Mays wasn’t the only area male athlete to find a place atop the podium.
