Sasquatch have a perfect weekend

Will and Sommer Kendall have been playing cornhole at a high level for several years, but after moving to Fredonia a little more than a year ago, the husband and wife duo decided to take the next step when Sommer gave Will permission to buy their own professional team.

That investment has already paid dividends.

Over the weekend, the Fredonia Sasquatch completed a perfect weekend, winning the North American Cornhole Alliance National Championship.

“I’m proud of the guys because they really locked in for the playoffs and took it up to another level,” Will said.

Although they had previously competed in the league, Will and Sommer took a step back from playing full time as they welcomed another child into their family. However, that did not remove their passion for the sport, prompting their interest in ownership.

“We talked about it and wanted to invest in it and get our own team in the league,” Will said. “She ended up having a baby, so we switched from players to owners because we couldn’t practice as much as we used to. We ended up just being the subs on our team because we wanted players that played more often.”

While the Sasquatch are the local team, their players come from all over, including greater Rochester and just over the Pennsylvania border.

Team members are Chris Jimerson, Chris Hart, Ed Bailey and Drayden Norton Jr., with Will and Sommer as substitutes.

Currently the team practices out of Falconer, but the goal is to get a facility soon or add an addition onto the Kendall’s garage.

The practice paid off this season as the team convincingly captured the regional championship before heading to the national title.

At regionals, Fredonia defeated the Buffalo Brawlers 21-11 and then Hamburg 21-3. Last weekend, the Sasquatch defeated the New Jersey Comets 21-4 and won the championship over the Ohio Aviators 21-9.

Just a second year into owning their own professional team, the Kendalls have not only helped the Sasquatch reach a championship and win one, but they also believe in the future of the league going forward.

“It means a lot,” Will said about having the support of his wife in buying a team. “Getting approval from my wife to make such an investment means a lot. Having her faith really meant a lot and sharing the vision, and I look forward to the next year already.”
