Spangler just misses trip to states
ORCHARD PARK — Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association singles players went 2-5 while doubles teams went 1-4 at the Section VI Boys Tennis Championships, hosted last week by Orchard Park High School.
Fredonia senior Jackson Spangler came the closest to qualifying for the state meet, reaching the semifinals in the singles bracket. Spangler beat Barker’s Dan Goodwin 6-0, 6-1 in the first round and Olmsted’s Samir Fares 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the second round. But in the semifinals, eventual champion Taylor McGrath of Orchard Park beat Spangler 6-0, 6-1. With a trip to Flushing Meadows on the line in the consolation match, Amherst’s Aiden Belle-Isle beat Spangler 6-1, 6-2.
Olean freshman Brayden Cook lost to Lewiston-Porter’s Andrew Jowdy 6-4, 6-3; Olean senior Josiah Todd lost to Olmsted’s Fares 6-1, 6-0; and Allegany-Limestone’s Etienne Marias lost to Williamsville North’s Dakshaeswar Muthukrishnan 6-1, 6-0.
At doubles, Maple Grove’s Jackson Sherry and Max Concejo won their first-round match 6-0, 6-1 over City Honors’ Max Madakovich and Milo Armstrong before losing to Williamsville East’s Knox Venator and Pratik Sharma 6-0, 6-4.
Southwestern’s Chase Haaksma and Matthew Persia lost to Lockport’s Brian Frazer and Andre Shotell 6-4, 6-2; Jamestown’s Jason Leenders and Matthew Johnson lost to Clarence’s Wyatt Truax and Jimmy Cieslewicz 6-2, 6-0; and Westfield’s Tahner Stowe and Adam Eggleston lost to Lewiston-Porter’s Jamie Townsend and Carmelo Raimondi 7-6 (4), 6-3.
McGrath won the singles title 6-2, 6-1 over Muthukrishnan while Belle-Isle took the third qualifying spot over Spangler.
Clarence’s Alex Laspro and Richie LaPaglia beat Venator and Sharma 6-1, 6-2 for the doubles title while Williamsville East’s Arjun Yadav and Salil Karkhanis beat Truax and Cieslewicz 2-6, 7-5, 6-3 for the third qualifying spot.
The New York State Public High School Athletic Association Championships will take place Friday through Sunday at the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing.
