Swabik begins decathlon at nationals
EUGENE, Ore. — Through four events in the decathlon at the NCAA Track & Field Championships, Sherman native John Swabik is in 21st place.
The Kansas senior scored 3,002 points after completing the 100 meters, the long jump, the shot put and the high jump, trailing leader Ben Barton of Brigham Young University, who stands at 3,468. Wednesday’s fifth event — the 400 meters — ended too late for this edition.
Competing at historic Hayward Field, Swabik ran 11.35 in the 100 meters for 784 points; recorded a leap of 6.91 meters in the long jump for 792 points; threw the shot a personal-best 13.02 meters for 668 points; and cleared the bar at 6-4 3/4 in the high jump for 758 points.
Today’s events include the 110-meter hurdles, the discus, the pole vault, the javelin and the 1,500 meters.
