Swabik takes 20th in decathlon at nationals
EUGENE, Ore. — The University of Kansas’ John Swabik’s dream for a national title came to an end Thursday.
The 2019 Sherman Central School graduate finished 20th in the men’s decathlon with 6,587 points at the 2026 NCAA Championships at the University of Oregon’s Hayward Field.
Swabik entered Day 2 of competition with 3,002 points after being disqualified from Wednesday’s final event, the 400 meters.
The 2019 NYSPHSAA Division 2 pentathlon champion opened Thursday’s action with a time of 15.23 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles, good for 16th among the 24 competitors and another 822 points added to his total.
Swabik then turned in a distance of 42.28 meters (138 feet, 8 inches) in the discus to add another 711 points to his total. That distance was 10th best in the field.
In the pole vault, the fifth-year senior cleared 4.51 meters (14 feet, 9.5 inches) to accumulate 763 points — 12th best among the two-dozen athletes.
Swabik then unleashed the eighth-best javelin throw at 47.68 meters (156 feet, 5 inches) to pick up another 554 points.
He finished his final event, the 1,500 meters, in 4:31.48, which was seventh in the field and garnered 735 points.
BYU senior Ben Barton won the decathlon title with 8,169 points. He trailed Louisville sophomore Kenneth Byrd by 50 points entering the 1,500 meters, but finished in 4:32.61 to accumulate his final 728 points. Byrd finished in 4:41.73 for a decathlon total of 8,160 points.
