LIVONIA – A group of Falconer softball players were planning on heading to Boston this weekend for their Senior Trip.
They’ll still get to go, but it will be an abbreviated stay in Beantown.
Mylie Zaranek hit a two-run home run and Emily Zaranek hit a two-run double as the Golden Falcons beat Caledonia-Mumford 9-4 in the Class C Far West Subregional at Livonia High School’s Phil Saunders Sports Complex on Wednesday night.
“I’m lucky. I am nothing but lucky to be in the position that I’m in,” first-year head coach Emily Hair said. “Day 1 it was very clear that they had this talent and this capability. It really has been them realizing the stakes, how good they are, and how good they can be.”
Next up for the Section VI champion is a New York State Public High School Athletic Association quarterfinal date with Section IV champion Deposit-Hancock on Friday evening. That game will be played at 5 p.m. at Gates-Chili High School.

Mylie Zaranek got the party started Wednesday when she followed a walk to Emily Rhinehart by hitting the fourth pitch she saw over the left-center field fence for a 2-0 lead before the Raiders even came to the plate.
“It was a no-doubter. That changed the momentum,” Hair said. “We keep talking about momentum every game, how important it is to keep it on your side, and take it from the other team. They are taking that really seriously as a group.”
Hannah Melquist followed Zaranek’s homer with a double, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a wild pitch to make it 3-0.
“Once one hits, they all do,” Hair said. “The top of the order is really important and they take their job seriously.”
Falconer added on in the third inning. Mylie Zaranek reached on a fielder’s choice for the first out and Melquist singled before Emily Zaranek hit a two-run double to center field.

“The pressure she puts on herself is competitiveness. It comes out in every single thing she does. I think she uses it the right way,” Hair said. “She’s really tough on herself, but she knows how good she is and everybody else knows how good she is. She needed that double badly.”
With two outs, Rachael Swanson hit an RBI single to plate Emily Zaranek with the Golden Falcons’ sixth run.
Rhinehart cruised through the first six innings in the circle for Falconer. She allowed two hits and struck out six with a flawless defense behind her.
“Compared to just the regular season, she is at such a higher level of intensity right now. You can see it all over here, in her warmup and in the way she is throwing during the game,” Hair said. “She wants it and you can tell. It oozes out of her and everybody else catches on.”
The Golden Falcons added three more runs in the seventh that proved to be valuable insurance. Mylie Zaranek was hit by a pitch to open the frame and Melquist followed with another single before a wild pitch moved them to second and third with no outs. Emily Zaranek followed with an RBI single, Melquist scored on a wild pitch and Swanson drove in a run with a groundball to make it 9-0.
Things got a little uneasy in the bottom of the seventh when Caledonia-Mumford doubled its hits total for the game with four singles, but Mylie Zaranek tracked down a flyball in center field with two runners on to end the game.
Hair and Principal Adam Erickson then hopped in a van with the team’s seniors and headed for Boston with an estimated return time of Friday morning – just in time to take a trip to Rochester with a berth in the state final four on the line.
“Our big emphasis is just to relax and have fun,” Hair said. “Have fun, be loose, enjoy it and enjoy the ride.”
