Area residents shine at Empire State Senior Games
CORTLAND — Five area residents competed in track & field events at the Empire State Senior Games at SUNY Cortland last month.
Suffice it to say, they made Chautauqua County proud.
Leading the way was Kay Gould of Blockville.
Competing in the 80-84 women’s division, Gould placed first in six events — the 50 meters (12.42), the 5,280-yard race walk (14:18.80), 100 meters (26.94), shot put (7.56 meters), discus (16.93 meters) and javelin (13.57 meters).
The area men who traveled to Cortland were Mike Sayers of Lakewood, Dennis Furlow of Blockville, Norman Chambliss of Dunkirk and Gordon Haight of Fredonia.
Sayers (70-74) placed first in the discus (32.13 meters) and the javelin (31.24 meters), and second in the shot put (8.54 meters); Furlow (60-64) was first in the discus (38.55 meters) and javelin (32.45 meters); Chambliss (80-84) was first in the javelin (23.9 meters), and second in the shot (9.21 meters) and discus (22.45 meters); and Haight (75-79) was second in the discus (24.38 meters).
