Hilliker captures Pennsylvania Open
NORTH EAST, Pa. — The Wednesday Travel League held its third major of the season, the Pennsylvania Open at Green Meadows Golf Course. The event was hosted by Frank “Benji” Benamati. Josh Hilliker was the overall winner with the low round of 77. Thirteen-year-old amateur Carter Crabtree finished second with 79 and Kevin Jasinski was third with 80.
The victory was Hilliker’s second Pennsylvania Open win and fifth major win overall. Hilliker also took home the inaugural Liberty Bell trophy, which will be passed on to a different flight winner each year. Jake Harp led the front nine with 37 and Hilliker led the back nine with 37.
In the B Flight, a three-way tiebreaker had Jeff Nelson winning over Dan Tofil and Dave Franklin. Tom Sacilowski and Jeff Marsowicz won the C and D flights, respectively. The low round by a senior was shot by Jim Ellman Sr., who also posted the lowest nine-hole score by a senior this season with a 39 on the front nine. The winner of the Bruce “Java” Chrabasz Commissioner’s Award was Lou Polichetti.
Untied birdies were recorded by: A Flight — Harp (No. 4), Robert Calph (Nos. 7, 9 and 13), Hilliker (Nos. 8, 14 and 15), Ed Tofil (No. 12) and Bob North (No. 16); B Flight — Nelson (No. 6), Dan Tofil (Nos. 10 and 18), Bill Emery (No. 14), Joe Michalski (No. 15) and Franklin (No. 17); C Flight — Ellman (No. 4) and Sacilowski (Nos. 12 and 14); and D Flight — Ryan Tofil (No. 1), Marsowicz (Nos. 5 and 17), Pete Pinkoski (No. 7), Bob Kujawa (Nos. 10 and 14), Tim Walawender (No. 13) and Joe Bifaro (No. 18).
Closest to the pin were: Harp (No. 3), Franklin (No. 7), Adam Gornikiewicz (No. 13) and Ed Tofil (No. 16). Winners of the Steeplechase were: Crabtree (A Flight), Nelson (B), Gornikiewicz (C) and Don Kujawa (D). Winners of the Par 3 Contest were: Hilliker (A), Franklin (B), Sacilowski (C) and Marsowicz (D).
Top point winners were: Calph (48), Hilliker (44), Marsowicz (36), Franklin (33) and North (30). Season points leaders (through 11 events): 1. Hilliker (327), 2. Sacilowski (223), 3. Nelson (156), 4. Marsowicz (126), 5. Phil Hopkins, Ed Tofil and Franklin (124 apiece), 8. Pinkoski (103), 9. Bob Kujawa (99) and 10. Mike Willoughby (96). This week Hilliker passed Gary Haase for ninth place on the all-time points list.
This week the league plays Rose Brook Golf Course in Irving with a 10 a.m. start. Interested golfers are asked to be signed up by noon Monday.
