Hilliker makes 8 birdies at Cardinal Hills GC

RANDOLPH -- The Wednesday Travel League held its annual "Red Shirt" event at Cardinal Hills Golf Course. Josh Hilliker shot a new league course record with an even-par 72, breaking the long-standing record of 75 held by Kerry Murphy.

Hilliker led both the front nine (34) and back nine (38). He made a record-tying eight birdies in his round, joining the late Ron "Moonie" Rys as the only golfers to accomplish the feat.

Robert Calph finished second with 81. Jeff Nelson and 13-year-old amateur Carter Crabtree tied for third with 84s. In the B Flight, John Waterman won after a tiebreaker with Ken Kaus. Joe Bifaro was the C Flight winner. The low round by a senior was shot by Dennis Gawronski Sr. The winner of the Bruce "Java" Chrabasz Commissioner's Award was Brady Hilliker.

Untied birdies were recorded by: A Flight -- Josh Hilliker (Nos. 2, 7, 9, 11, 14 and 17), Calph (No. 5), Crabtree (No. 10) and Nelson (No. 12); B Flight -- Jeff Marsowicz (No. 1), Tim Walawender (No. 2), Dave Franklin (Nos. 3 and 17), Gawronski (No. 8), Kaus (No. 11), Gary Haase (No. 12) and Waterman (No. 16); C Flight -- Brady Hilliker (No. 3), Aidan Hilliker (No. 7), Bifaro (No. 15), Don Kujawa (No. 17) and Bob Kujawa (No. 18).

Closest to the pin were: Don Kujawa (No. 4), Marsowicz (No. 9), Josh Hilliker (No. 11) and Mike Willoughby (No. 18). Winners of the Steeplechase were: Tom Sacilowski (A Flight), Haase (B) and Aidan Hilliker (C).

Top point winners were: Josh Hilliker (career-high 94), Marsowicz and Don Kujawa(16 apiece), and Waterman, Willoughby and Haase (12 apiece). Season points leaders (after 14 events): 1. Josh Hilliker (477), 2. Sacilowski (240), 3. Nelson (206), 4. Phil Hopkins (185), 5. Franklin (174), 6. Dave Wallace (146), 7. Marsowicz (142), 8. Willoughby (136), 9. Ed Tofil (129), 10. Bob Kujawa (113). Josh Hilliker passed Al Etzel for seventh place on the all-time points list.

This week the league plays Country Meadows Golf Course in Venango, Pennsylvania. The first tee time is at 9:30 a.m. Golfers are asked to be signed up by noon Monday.
