JCC women, men win openers

LAKE COUNTY, Ohio -- It was a near-flawless debut for Jamestown Community College head coach Sarah Chimera and her 2026 Jayhawks as they returned from Lakeland CC with an 8-0 win Wednesday night.
The game started with Avery Johnson (Lakewood, N.Y./Southwestern Central School) dominating in front of the net, tallying a quick hat trick for JCC to build an early 3-0 lead.
That was followed up by a play that could go down as the assist of the season, which came just before halftime when Jamestown keeper Angel Busch (Westfield, N.Y./Westfield Academy & Central School) sent a ball into the Lakers end of the pitch to Mary Lundmark (Falconer, N.Y./Falconer Central School), who one-touched it into the back of the net for a 4-0 advantage at the break and a highlight-reel connection for the goalkeeper and forward.
The second 45 minutes was more of the same for JCC, with Lundmark tallying two more goals for a hat trick of her own. Johnson and Lundmark were joined in the scoring column by Sarah Kruszka (South Dayton, N.Y./Pine Valley Central School) and Kennady Ellsworth (Fairview, Pa./McDowell High School). Jamestown’s boxscore also featured assists by Kaylyn Carnes (Celoron, N.Y./Southwestern Central School), Johnson and a pair from Kruszka.
In net, Busch stopped all six shots she faced for the clean sheet.
The season-opening win starts JCC off with a 1-0 record.
Jamestown looks to make it 2-0 when it visits Finger Lakes CC to open Region 3 play on Wednesday at 4 p.m.

LAKE COUNTY, Ohio -- The Jamestown Community College men’s soccer team opened the 2026 campaign at Lakeland CC on Wednesday afternoon and made the two-hour drive home a special one for new head coach Jesse Da Costa with a 3-1 victory.
This contest didn’t start as coach Da Costa would have drawn it up, with the Jayhawks getting out of position on defense and the Lakers capitalizing 13 minutes in for a 1-0 JCC deficit.
Jamestown responded quickly, scoring less than two minutes later off the boot of sophomore Liam Doyle (Clonagoose, Ireland/Mullinahone, FC) to square things up at 1-1.
The game stayed even with halftime approaching until sophomore Samuel Hynes (Armidale, Australia/The Armidale School) showed why he’s an all-region performer and put the Jayhawks ahead with a goal in the 37th minute, making it a 2-1 JCC advantage at the break.
Jamestown finished the scoring in the second half when sophomore Casimiro Espeso (Valladolid, Spain/Victoria C.F.) found the back of the net off an assist from Curro Rivas (Sevialle, Spain/Portacli HS) in the 50th minute for the two-goal lead and a final score of 3-1.
Outside of the early hiccup, Theo Merlin (Narbonne, France/Sporting Club Narbonne Montplaisir) was perfect in net, stopping eight of the nine shots he faced.
The win moves JCC to 1-0 early in the season.
Jamestown opens Region 3 play on Saturday at 2 p.m. when they host Clinton CC at Strider Field in Jamestown.
