VENANGO, Pa. -- The Wednesday Travel League played Country Meadows Golf Course and its trademark No. 17 island green.
Robert Calph cruised to his second win of the season, posting the low round of 74 (36-38). Bob North finished second with 81 and Tom Sacilowski was third with 82, matching his low career round in league play.
Pete Pinkoski was the B Flight winner. In the C Flight, a four-way tiebreaker was won by Bob Thompson, over Bob Kujawa, Jim Ellman Sr., and Pat Weaver. The low round by a senior was shot by Ron Szach. The winner of the Bruce “Java” Chrabasz Commissioner’s Award was Steve Schrantz.
Untied birdies were recorded by: A Flight, Dave Wallace (Nos. 1, 4), Ed Tofil (No. 2), Calph (No. 7), Jeff Baker (No. 11), North (Nos. 12, 15) and Szach (No. 17); B Flight, Ken Kaus (No. 4), Joe Bifaro (No. 5), 13-year-old amateur Carter Crabtree (Nos. 6, 8), Pinkoski (No. 13), Tom Destro (No.14), and Dave Franklin (No. 17); C Flight, John Waterman (Nos. 1, 2), Ellman (No. 5), Mike Willoughby (Nos. 6, 17), Thompson (Nos. 7, 14, 15), and Kujawa (Nos. 9, 16).
Closest to the pin were Waterman (No.2), Crabtree (No.8), Jeff Nelson (No.11) and Szach (No.17). Szach’s shot just missed the hole and rested 1 foot, 9 inches from the cup. Winners of the Steeplechase were Calph (A Flight), Pinkoski (B), and Weaver (C).

This week the league will hold its fourth major of the season, the Frank Borowski Invitational, which is named for its league founder. The event will take place at The Ridge in Erie, Pennsylvania with a 9:30 a.m. start. At this time all spots are filled. Golfers can be added to the sub/alternate list
On Wednesday, Sept. 9, the league will hold the “Commissioner’s Cup” at Chautauqua Golf Club’s Hill Course with a 9:30 a.m. start. The event honors the life and memory of Bruce “Java” Chrabasz. Golfers can sign up at (716) 785-2291.
