5 long TDs send C/S/P past Fredonia

SHERMAN -- During a 35-6 Week 1 victory over Silver Creek/Forestville, just one of Clymer/Sherman/Panama's five touchdown plays went for more than 4 yards.

On Saturday, the Wolfpack unlocked their big-play potential.

All five of Clymer/Sherman/Panama's touchdowns were on plays of more than 30 yards as the Wolfpack beat Fredonia 40-8 in the Class C South opener for both teams at Harry S. Brosius Field.

"I'm disappointed. I really thought we'd be better disciplined on both sides of the ball," Fredonia head coach Greg Sherlock said. "I'm not going to take any credit away from C/S/P, they have a very, very good team. They have athletes at every position."

Blake Beckerink rushed nine times for 182 yards and a pair of long touchdowns as Clymer/Sherman/Panama totaled 351 yards and four touchdowns on 25 carries. The Wolfpack's other score came on a 42-yard pass from Gavin Burchanowski to Johnny Abers.

"We had some decent runs last week, but I don't plan on it. It's not meant to be a quick-scoring offense," Clymer/Sherman/Panama head coach Dave Bodamer said after the win. "It's nice. I was giving (offensive coordinator) Jarrett Wiggers a hard time at halftime because we needed to put a drive together. We ran for 351 and had only nine first downs."

Conversely, the Hillbillies rushed 28 times for just 71 yards as a team.

Clymer/Sherman/Panama (2-0, 1-0) jumped out to a 24-0 lead midway through the second quarter.

"They took it to us from the opening kickoff," Sherlock said. "We weren't ready for the physicality that they were dishing out."

Beckerink took the second play of the game 70 yards for a score to make it 8-0 after his own 2-point conversion run. Then, facing a third-and-10, Burchanowski dropped back and found Abers for their long touchdown connection with 1:13 left in the opening quarter. Burchanowski's 2-point run made it 16-0.

"On the long pass play," Sherlock said, "we saw it and we just couldn't get back on it."

After Fredonia (1-1, 0-1) failed to convert a fourth-and-11 at the Wolfpack's 13-yard line, Clymer/Sherman/Panama needed just two more plays to spring Beckerink for an 84-yard score that made it 24-0 after Dylan Kriner's 2-point run.

"Because of our quick-scoring offense, we were spending a lot of time on defense. It's one thing to give up the yards and that's a little bit frustrating, but they had a good plan and were making adjustments," Bodamer said. "They found some things that worked well for them."

With 1:17 remaining in the first half, Burchanowski intercepted a pass and was ruled down at the 1-yard line. On the next play, Kriner was stopped in the end zone for a Fredonia safety to put the Hillbillies on the scoreboard.

After the break, Hayden Sexton scored on a 58-yard run to make it 32-2 after Burchanowski's second 2-point conversion run.

"I remember one play when they ran a counter, they sucked in about nine of our defensive players. They did not stay home and went away from all of their rules," Sherlock said. "They got out there and it was one guy trying to stop them."

Fredonia answered with Markel Davis' 16-yard touchdown run that was set up by Noah Palisin's 38-yard pass to Brayden Korzeniewski, but Abers made it 40-8 with a 32-yard touchdown run coupled with his own 2-point run.

"Our sophomore quarterback ... overall when he sits in the pocket he can do some really nice things," Sherlock said. "We see growth every week. Even when things are going south, he really has a level head."

"It was a bend-don't-break feeling for us today," Bodamer said. "We gave up too many yards in the passing game. We just weren't doing some basic drops with our backers and we weren't making good reads."

The Hillbillies will look to get back on track next Friday at the Orange Bowl against Gowanda/Pine Valley (1-1, 0-1) while Clymer/Sherman/Panama will travel to Bill Race Field to take on Falconer/Cassadaga Valley/Maple Grove (1-1, 0-1) that same night.

"We know that we have to get prepared. Any day, you better show up in this league. I do feel like there is a lot of parity right now," Bodamer said. "You just have to take it one week at a time and you can't afford to look ahead."

NOTES: Abers ran four times for 63 yards and also completed three passes for 30 yards in relief of Burchanowski. ... Palisin, a sophomore, went 19 of 27 for 205 yards and two interceptions through the air. Korzeniewski caught four passes for 95 yards, Lavonce Donaldson caught seven for 66 yards and Ryan Johnson caught six for 37 yards. ... Ayden Wronski ran 16 times for 38 yards and Davis ran six times for 35 yards for the Hillbillies. ... Defensively for Clymer/Sherman/Panama, Burchanowski and Toby Watson had interceptions; Watson and Kriner had sacks; and Daniel Redlecki was in on nine tackles.
