Hillbillies shine at Red Dragon Invite

BEMUS POINT -- More than 500 cross-country runners from western New York and northwestern Pennsylvania turned out at Bemus Point Golf Club on Saturday for the annual Red Dragon Invitational.

The large crowd that supported the athletes were treated to plenty of fine team and individual performances.

Locally, the Maple Grove boys captured the Small School title with 31 points as five runners scored in the top 15, led by Jack Sherry. His time of 17:28.38, was good for third behind winner Noah Klahn of West Valley (16:26.74) and second-place Nolan Wilczewski of Allegany-Limestone (16:59.91), who both represented incomplete teams.

The other scorers for Maple Grove were Liam Price, Finn Erlandson, William Benson and Maddox Lombardo.

Two area teams -- the Eisenhower boys (Small School) and Fredonia girls (Large School) -- placed second in their respective classifications; the Jamestown boys (Large Schools), the Jamestown girls (Large Schools) and the Maple Grove girls (Small Schools) all finished third; and the Fredonia boys (Large Schools), the Franklinville/Ellicottville boys (Small School) and Cattaraugus-Little Valley girls (Small School) placed fourth.

Individually, the other top-10 finishers among the boys were Thomas Kathman of Jamestown (Large School), second place; Caleb Johnson of Jamestown (Large School), third; Price of Maple Grove (Small School), fourth; Parker McBride of Eisenhower (Small School), fifth; Mason Britt of Eisenhower (Small School), seventh; Anson Miller of Falconer/Cassadaga Valley (Small School), eighth; Erlandson of Maple Grove (Small School), ninth; and Hudson Himes of Jamestown (Large School), 10th.

Top-10 finishers among the girls were Meredith Lendt of Fredonia (Large School), second; Lily Elliss of Maple Grove (Small School), second; Kadence Durow of Randolph (Small School), fourth; Isabelle Grosch of Eisenhower (Small School), sixth; Lillian Weikel of Southwestern (Large School), sixth; Sydney Yerico of Fredonia (Large School), seventh; London Hamilton of Jamestown (Large School), eighth; Leah Mays of Silver Creek (Large School), ninth; and Alivia Richter of Gowanda (Small School), 10th.

Lancaster won both the boys and girls Large School team titles, highlighted by first-place individual finishes by Dante Strangis and Charlotte Winnicki; and Allegany-Limestone claimed the Small School girls classification, highlighted by Elexa Duggan's first-place finish.
