Hilliker captures Commissioner’s Cup

CHAUTAUQUA -- The Wednesday Travel League held its 12th annual Commissioner's Cup at Chautauqua Golf Club's Hill Course. The event honors the life and memory of past league Commissioner Bruce "Java" Chrabasz. Dinner and the awards presentation were held at the Dunkirk Falcons Club. Golfers donned orange, brown and white, the colors of the Cleveland Browns, Java's favorite team

Brady Hilliker was this year's overall champion, edging out last year's winner Katie Michalak. Hilliker's prize was donated by Java's close friend, Jim Bohn. The low scratch score of 78 was shot by Robert Calph. Jason Habich (83) and Jeff Nelson (84) were second and third, respectively. Calph led the front nine with 37 and Dave Wallace matched Calph's 41 for the low back nine.

Flight winners were: Calph (A), Tom Sacilowski (B), John Waterman (C) and Bill Lanski (D). The low round by a senior was recorded by Dave Criscione. With his victory, Hilliker also won the weekly Bruce "Java" Chrabasz Commissioner’s Award.

Untied birdies were recorded by: A Flight -- Dave Franklin (No. 2), Habich (No. 3), Nelson (Nos. 5 and 7), Calph (Nos. 8 and 16), Wallace (Nos. 10 and 15), Criscione (No. 12) and Joe Michalski (No. 13); B Flight -- Tim Walawender (No. 1), Sacilowski (No. 5), George Allessi (No. 9), Phil Maslak (No. 13), Jim Mayer (No. 14) and Adam Gornikiewicz (Nos. 17 and 18); C Flight -- Ron Szach (No. 5), Waterman (Nos. 9 and 15) and Dennis Gawronski Sr. (Nos. 17 and 18); D Flight -- Joe Majka (Nos. 7 and 15), Rachael Pinkoski (Nos. 8 and 9) and Don Kujawa (No. 17).

Closest to the pin were: Gary Haase (No. 2), Majka (No. 7), Maslak (No. 13) and Wallace (No. 15, only 5 inches from the cup). Winners of the par-3 contest were: Franklin (A), Maslak (B), Waterman (C) and Majka (D). Winners of the Steeplechase were: Calph (A), Sacilowski (B), Pat Weaver (C, league-high sixth win) and Majka (D).

In the special Browns Ball contest, only three foursomes finished with their Browns logo ball. With a winning score of 94, was the team of Pete Pinkoski, Rachael Pinkoski, Sacilowski and Majka. Second place with 95 was the team of Criscione, David Polichetti, Nelson and Maslak. Third place with 96 was the team of Habich, Michalak, Lanski and Frank Issler. All other teams lost their ball before finishing.

Top point winners were: Majka (90), Wallace (68), Waterman (59), Nelson (50) and Franklin (45). Season points leaders (after 19 events): 1. Josh Hilliker (636), 2. Franklin (312), 3. Nelson (293), 4. Sacilowski (272), 5. Waterman (266), 6. Wallace (232), 7. Ed Tofil (221), 8. Calph (187), 9. Phil Hopkins (185), 10. Pete Pinkoski (173). Milestone reached this week: Gary Haase went over 3,500 career points.
