Hilliker leads Wednesday Travel League at Pennhills Club

BRADFORD, Pa. -- The Wednesday Travel League had a delayed start to its event at Pennhills Club due to severe thunderstorms and lightning. Once the weather cleared up, golfers struggled on the tougher-than-usual conditions with only one golfer shooting below his average.

Josh Hilliker won his 10th event of the season with the low round of 79. Robert Calph finished second with 84 and Jeff Nelson was third with 91. Hilliker led both the front (38) and back (41) nines. John Waterman won the B Flight for the 90th time, most all-time. Dennis Gawronski Sr. and Ron Szach tied for the low round by a senior. The winner of the Bruce "Java" Chrabasz Commissioner's Award was Aidan Hilliker.

Untied birdies were recorded by: A Flight -- Dave Franklin (No. 4), Josh Hilliker (Nos. 7 and 14), and Nelson (Nos. 16 and 18); B Flight -- Joe Majka (No. 1), Bob Kujawa (No. 3), Tim Walawender (Nos. 4 and 9), Brady Hilliker (No. 6), Aidan Hilliker (No. 10) and Gawronski (No. 17).

Closest to the pin were: Calph (No. 2), Brady Hilliker (No. 6) and Franklin (No. 11). Winners of the Steeplechase were: Josh Hilliker in A Flight and Pat Weaver in B Flight. Weaver now leads the league with five Steeplechase wins.

Top point winners were: Josh Hilliker (42), Brady Hilliker (29), Franklin (19) and Nelson (18). Season points leaders (after 18 events): 1. Josh Hilliker (636), 2. Franklin (267), 3. Nelson (243), 4. Tom Sacilowski (240), 5. Ed Tofil (221), 6. Waterman (207), 7. Phil Hopkins (185), 8. Mike Willoughby (168), 9. 13-year-old amateur Carter Crabtree (167), 10. Dave Wallace and Pete Pinkoski (164 apiece).

This week the league holds the "Commissioner's Cup" honoring the life and memory of Bruce "Java" Chrabasz. It will be held at Chautauqua Golf Club’s Hill Course at 9:30 a.m. Golfers are asked to be signed up by noon Monday at 716-785-2291.
