JAMESTOWN -- The Jamestown Community College volleyball team started its second season under head coach Cherish Pope with a perfect 3-0 first-match win over SUNY Broome inside the Physical Education Complex.
Jamestown CC jumped out to an early lead on the Hornets when they secured the first set 25-18. The second set was a little closer, finishing with a 25-20 win for the Jayhawks as they closed on a four-point run. In the third set, it was once again 25-18, with Jamestown securing the 3-0 sweep to open their regular season.
"Starting the season with a win over Broome was a great way to set the tone," Pope said. "We've put a lot of work into preparing for this moment, and it was exciting to see that work translate onto the court."
Against SUNY Broome, Nazariah Neal led the Jayhawks with seven kills, Zoe Spiller had five blocks, Natalie Little had 26 digs and Spiller had two aces.
After an hour break between matches, the Jayhawks needed time to take flight in their second match, falling behind Corning CC 2-0 after losing the sets 25-20 and a heartbreaker in extra points 28-26.
That's when Jamestown CC turned things around, winning the third set decisively 25-11. Jamestown CC came back out in the fourth set and once again found a flow, taking it 25-18 to force a decisive set No. 5.
The fifth set found Jamestown CC in a quick 10-4 hole in the race to 15 points. Jamestown CC would close the gap but ultimately fall 15-7, dropping the match 3-2.
Against Corning CC, Brittany Colon led the Jayhawks with 12 kills, Spiller had five blocks, Little had 35 digs and Colon had three aces.
Despite the setback to close the day, Pope knows she and the Jayhawks have a solid foundation on which to build.
"I’m incredibly proud of the fight our team showed against Corning," she said. "Going down 0-2 and battling all the way back to force a fifth set says a lot about the character and competitiveness of this group. That loss stings because we know how close we were, but it also gives us a lot to be excited about. When we start limiting our mistakes, we’re going to be a very tough team to beat."
Jamestown CC has a week to fine tune some things before they return to the court Saturday, when they travel to the Erie CC POD versus SUNY Adirondack at 10 a.m. and Hudson Valley CC at noon.
