Doubles competition at CCAAs needs 3

LAKEWOOD -- A pair of three-set marathons highlighted the opening day of doubles action at the Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Tennis Championships on Thursday at the Lakewood YMCA.

After none of the singles matches went the distance Wednesday, a prequarterfinal and a quarterfinal reached three sets Thursday.

First, in the prequarterfinals, Fredonia's Rosie Manzella and Michaela Haas beat Frewsburg/Southwestern's Marleigh Stappenbeck and Ella Fuller 6-2 in their first set before losing the second set 6-7 with a 2-7 tiebreaker. Then, in the third set, Manzella and Haas rallied for a 6-2 victory.

In the quarterfinals, Falconer's Jenna Bellinger and Lauren Whitmore lost their first set 5-7 to Fredonia's Amelia Way and Hazel Daly-Griffen before winning 7-5, 6-3.

Bellinger and Whitmore were one of four doubles teams to advance to today's semifinals.

Fredonia's Nella Darrell-Sterbak and Charis LaBarr beat Olean's Tiana Maine and Molly Burnett 6-0, 6-2 in the prequarterfinals before a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Salamanca's Betsy Leyva and Kurryn Glowacki in the quarterfinals.

Bellinger and Whitmore topped Olean's Simran Chahal and Addy Wright 6-4, 6-4 in the prequarterfinals before their quarterfinal win over Way and Daly-Griffen.

Olean's Lina Chauhdry and Natalie Snyder beat Cassadaga Valley's Cathryn Russell and Addisyn Grissom 6-0, 6-0 in the prequarterfinals and Salamanca's Sage Huff and Mimi McComber 6-3, 6-0 in the quarterfinals.

Chautauqua Lake/Maple Grove's Eden Ludwig and Cameron Mackey topped Falconer's Mae Gustafson and Courtney Kujawa 6-2, 6-1 in the prequarterfinals before beating Manzella and Haas 6-3, 6-3 in the quarterfinals.

Today's semifinals will begin at 10 a.m. In doubles action, Darrell-Sterbak and LaBarr will take on Bellinger and Whitmore while Chauhdry and Snyder will take on Ludwig and Mackey. In singles play, Falconer's Myla Brainard will play Frewsburg/Southwestern's Claire Spielman while Falconer's Rachael Swanson will take on Olean's Rachael Dulmus.

The top three finishers in doubles and singles will advance to the Section VI Tennis Championships, which will be held Friday, Oct. 16 and Saturday, Oct. 17 at the Miller Tennis Center in Williamsville.
