Walters, Suboticki claim Shubert Memorial title

2 min read

DUNKIRK -- The second annual Jack Shubert Memorial Golf Tournament was held recently at Shorewood Country Club. Emerging as champions were Charlie Walters and Joe Suboticki, with Joe Woloszyn and Lyndon Smith finishing as first runnersup.

Shorewood's signature three-day tournament is held in memory of the late Jack Shubert. Jack was the beloved golf professional at Shorewood Country Club in Dunkirk for 48 years. He also taught business law and accounting and served as chairman of the business department at Dunkirk High School for 34 years.

The flighted match-play event brought together 36 teams from across six flights. Winners from each flight advanced to an exciting three-hole medal-play "Shootout" to determine the tournament champions.

The shootout saw Joe Woloszyn and Lyndon Smith surge into a tie for the lead when Woloszyn made lengthy birdie putts on back-to-back holes. On the final hole, however, Charlie Walters responded with a birdie of his own, getting up and down from a greenside bunker. The clutch finish secured the 2026 Jack Shubert Memorial Golf Tournament championship for Walters and teammate Joe Suboticki.

The Jim Koch Memorial Trophy was awarded to Woloszyn and Smith for their finish as first runnersup in the tournament. The trophy, donated by Priscilla Koch, is in honor of the late Jim Koch, an avid golfer and longtime member and supporter of Shorewood Country Club.

Flight winners were Kevin Kaszuba and Josh Wilmot in Flight 1; Scott Herdzik and Max Nogay in Flight 2; Mark Maytum and Roger Calanni in Flight 3; Rick Bellando and Eric Bellando in Flight 4; Zach Buckley and Connor Farnham in Flight 5; and Gary Richardson and James Fafinski in Flight 6.
