Man turns self in for stolen gravestone

FRENCH CREEK — A man faces charges in the theft of a gravestone from St. Mathias Cemetery.

The Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office reports that Edwin. L. Stancliff turned himself in to investigators today. He was charged with petit larceny and first degree cemetery desecration. He was taken to the county jail and will be arraigned using centralized arraignment.

The stone was stolen Wednesday and located Friday in Erie, Pa. by Chautauqua County sheriff’s deputies with assistance from the Pennsylvania State Police.
