Gerry man accused of assaulting woman, stealing her vehicle

GERRY — A Gerry man is accused of assaulting a woman, stealing her vehicle and trying to run her over.

According to the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office, on Saturday around 4:30 a.m., deputies were dispatched to a report of an assault. A citizen called 911 reporting that an unknown female victim arrived injured at their home, stating she had been assaulted.

Deputies and medical personnel made contact with the female victim, who stated that she had been driving her vehicle when a passenger, 36-year-old Charles H. Swanson IV, allegedly began striking her in the face. The female stopped in the roadway, at which point Swanson allegedly forced her out and stole the vehicle.

Swanson also allegedly swerved in an attempt to strike the female as she ran to a residence for help. The female was transported to UPMC Chautauqua for treatment. Deputies were unable to locate Swanson at that time.

Around 7 a.m., the Sheriff’s Office received a call stating the vehicle had been abandoned along Route 62 in the Town of Ellington. Deputies and Sheriff’s K9 Drake checked the surrounding area, located Swanson hiding behind a business. Swanson was taken into custody after surrendering to K9 Drake. He was sent to Centralized Arraignment on charges of secon-degree robbery (C-felony), third-degree grand larceny (D-felony), third-degree assault, second-degree reckless endangerment, and issuance of an Order of Protection.

Swanson was released without bail to appear in court at a later date.
