Ermo leads Norwalk past Beekman in Game 1 of BRWS

OBSERVER Photo by Matt Spielman Norwalk, Connecticut's Jaxon Ermo reacts with third-base coach John Bell after Ermo hit an RBI triple during Game 1 of the Babe Ruth 13-15 World Series against Beekman, New York, on Saturday at Diethrick Park in Jamestown.

JAMESTOWN — Jaxon Ermo allowed three of the first four batters he faced to score in Game 1.

After that, he pitched like the ace he’s been throughout Norwalk’s run to the Babe Ruth 13-15 World Series.

Ermo was pretty good with the bat in his hands, too, as he finished a home run shy of the cycle and drove in a run. Added together, it was enough to lead the New England Regional champions to an 8-5 victory over Beekman, New York on Saturday at Diethrick Park.

Ermo doubled in the first inning, belted an RBI triple in the third and, after grounding out in the fifth, he singled in the sixth. On the mound, he threw 93 pitches in five innings during which he struck out seven, walked two and hit a batter.

The right-hander was certainly deserving of being named the Tide’s Ron Tellefsen Most Outstanding Player.

It just didn’t start out that way.

After being staked to a 4-0 lead after the top of the first inning — Matt Weiss had an RBI fielder’s choice, Mike Marini collected an RBI single and Dylan Forte added a sacrifice fly — Ermo struggled with his command in the bottom half of the frame when he threw 35 pitches. After hitting a batter and walking another with one out, he gave up a two-run double to Tristan Rivera and an RBI double by Christian Anderson.

Beekman tied the game 4-4 in the bottom of the second, courtesy of Tyler Brochu’s sacrifice fly, as Ermo’s pitch count ballooned to 60.

After that, however, Ermo found his rhythm and needed just 33 pitches over the next three frames to earn the win.

Meanwhile, Norwalk broke the tie with two runs in the third on Ermo’s RBI triple and Aidan Brehm’s RBI single, and added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth on RBI singles by Matt Weiss and Marini.

Beekman’s final run came in the sixth on Casey Loundes’ RBI groundout off reliever Antonio Marchetti.

NOTES: Weiss and Marini both had two hits and two RBIs for Norwalk. … Rivera was named the Tellefsen Most Outstanding Player for Beekman. … Joining him with two hits was Aidan Suarez. … Jordan Suarez, one of three Beekman pitchers, took the loss.
