LAKEWOOD — Fredonia, Frewsburg, Southwestern and Chautauqua Lake saw success in doubles action at the Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Championships on Friday at the Lakewood YMCA, with one team from each school advancing to today’s semifinals.

Chautauqua Lake’s duo of Olivia Shearer and Mary Marshaus made advancing to the semifinals look easy by sweeping the Falconer pair of Mia VandeVelde and Emily Green 6-0, 6-0. Then, the Thunderbirds punched a ticket into the finals by getting past Fredoina’s Ava Hartung and Jena Gullo 6-2, 6-0.

Fredonia had a chance for two teams to advance to the semifinals, but it was the pair of Nella Darrell-Sterbak and Charis LaBarr to make it through. The duo first beat Olean’s Faith Schriber and Lina Chauhdry 7-5, 6-2 and then to get to the finals they beat Salamanca’s Jasmine Smith and Emily Benjamin 6-1, 6-2.

The Southwestern team of Erika Pickard and Abby Strother breezed into the finals with only one close match in the third round. Pickard and Strother first defeated Jamestown’s Maddie Strickland and Jazmyn Tonkin 6-1, 6-1 and then they moved into the finals beating Falconer’s Rachael Swanson and Jerzie Smith 6-1, 7-5.

In the closest match earning a berth into the semifinals was the Frewsburg team of Grace Kutschke and Brooke Golab going to tiebreakers twice against the Olean pair of Rose Scordo and Ava Smith in the third round. The Bears advanced by first falling 6-7 (8-10), then winning 7-6 (7-5), and then finally advancing with a 6-4 win. The previous matchup was handled easier, getting past Southwestern’s Dani Mincarelli and Audrey Delong 6-0, 6-3.

The semifinals and finals begin at 11 this morning at the Lakewood YMCA to determine seeding. Only three seeds will advance to Buffalo next weekend.
