SILVER CREEK -- For the third year in a row, the streets of Silver Creek were busy as a powerful message was sent.
Along with umbrellas through the consistent rain, marchers carried American flags and a banner that read "They marched for us... We walk for them," on a 22-minute stroll through the streets of Silver Creek on a Saturday morning to fight against veteran suicide.
The third annual event, titled the Stop 22 Walk, was organized by Silver Creek VFW Auxiliary Post 6472 President Deanna Borrello. Participating alongside the Silver Creek Post were VFW Auxiliaries from Sheridan, Gowanda, and Cherry Creek.
Despite rainy weather, approximately 50 people participated in the march last Saturday morning, including two scout troops and State Senator George Borrello. The route, which was designed to last 22 minutes, began and ended at the Silver Creek VFW.
"There was a crowd, more than I thought because of the rain," said Village Trustee Sandra Lindstrom. "It didn't dampen anybody's spirits."
The number 22 holds significance because 22 veterans are lost to suicide each day, according to states that report veteran suicide rates. The month of October is highlighted by the VFW overseers at the state level as a time to raise awareness for the issue of veteran suicide.
Registration and donations received at the event will benefit suicide prevention. Donations are still being accepted at the Silver Creek VFW to benefit the cause.
